US City Struck By 30-Mile Wide Dust Storm

Video: Huge Dust Storm Hits Phoenix, Arizona, Bringing Drivers To A Halt And Closing The Airport | World News | Sky News

A huge dust storm has hit the US city of Phoenix in Arizona on Tuesday, blocking visibility and closing the state's largest airport.

Dramatic footage shows the 30-mile wide storm sweeping over the city.
The large sandstorms - also known as haboobs - are common in the south-west of the country between May and September due to the high temperatures and low moisture in desert areas.

However, this one came with sustained winds of up to 70mph, which whipped up masses of ground dust and dirt.
The blinding storm forced the temporary closure of the Sky Harbour Airport in the city.
Drivers unable to see where they were going also had to pull off the major roads for safety reasons.
