Jailed for selling Eurovoxes (400,000 of them)

Seen this in the Mirror yesterday and thought I would share it.

A chap has been jailed for selling over 400,000 boxes and the suggested cost to VM is estimated at ?144m per year..... Ouch....That figure must be well over egged surely.

Has anyone on here had any dealing with them???

Yeah,,, I think it would be hard for them to prosecute individuals, but you never know and it would only take one successful test case of an individual to a Eurovox and it could be batten down the hatches time. Haha..

Work it out !

?144,000,000 / 400,000 = ?360 per box per year, or ?30 per box per month.

Put like that it doesn't actually sound too far off the mark does it ?

Of course, a load of the 400,000 people who bought boxes may of never considered purchasing services from VM in the first place but most courts would still consider this to be 'lost' revenue.

Unfortunately, I believe these guys kept records of pretty much everything including cutomers names/addresses/credit card No's etc, and all without any thought of encryption - just loads of text and spreadsheet files !

They also made the stupidest of mistakes by supplying a box that only had one fully functional firmware that included the N1 emulator. There was never any hint of the existance of any FTA only firmware. All boxes were supplied fully operational !

why worry just because you bought a box it doesnt mean you actually used it or you could have bought it for someone. They could never prove you actually used it- if they could then why did you not get caught when you were using it.

I know what you are saying is essentially correct - and I am not worrying. But, if the guy has sold them and not used them why is that illegal - the case it shows that he was prosecuted (successfully) for selling the boxes which can receive encrypted channels.

Pig he was encouraging fraud by trading in these boxes. Much the same as the 3 guys who formed pirate bay got jailed for the same thing. If they asked me about mine i bought 3 years ago i would simply say i bought it not knowing what it done, but when i found out i binned the thing. Then tell them you never even connected it to their services or switched it on.
