COPS in India have taken DNA samples from a young girl after a Brit tourist spotted her and thought she looked like Madeleine McCann.
She was part of a group of holidaymakers in the northern city of Leh who saw the girl with a man and a woman.
Private investigators are looking into the sighting ? made by the British woman and two Americans.
They tried to take the girl from the couple who claimed to be her French mum and Belgian dad.
Police confiscated their passports while they probed the claims last weekend.
Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate McCann, said: "Our private investigators are aware of the reports from India over the weekend about a possible sighting of Madeleine.
"We are liaising with the Indian authorities over the incident and await the results of the DNA test."
Leh police said it would be a great honour if they had managed to locate Madeleine in their city.
Maddie was three when she disappeared from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
The youngster ? who has a distinctive blemish in her right eye ? vanished as ex-GP Kate, 43, and consultant cardiologist Gerry, 42, enjoyed a meal with friends at a nearby tapas bar.
Maddie had been sleeping in a bedroom at the flat with twin siblings Amelie and Sean, now six.
