School bans girl who wore skirt

Teen spends second day at home after defying school skirt ban

Years ago, it was frowned upon for a woman to wear a pair of trousers to school. But for one school near Bristol, the opposite seems to be true today.

Schoolgirl Sharna Griffin, 15, spent her second day out of school on Monday for wearing a knee-length black skirt.

Officials at Nailsea School near Bristol sent Griffin, who is currently studying for her GCSEs, home for not abiding by their dress code which has a trousers-only policy

Her father, Paul Griffin, who brought her home from school, was not pleased with the decision.

"Our financial situation meant we could not buy trousers over the weekend, so we sent her to school with a skirt on again and a note explaining why," said Mr Griffin, 44.

The school introduced a trousers-only policy this term because of girls turning up in short skirts.

A uniform is a simple rule????..
Let us teach our children how to obey simple institutional rules.

My 14 year old brother was complaining the other day that his school now has a required length that skirts should be. Below the knee i think.
And to be honest, it's nothing to do with dress code... It's to try and help improve the boys grades by giving them less distractions...which seems fair.

Starvation in Africa. Nuclear crisis in Japan. Revolution in the Arab States. World Financial meltdown.

... and some dumb family who can't follow school rules is considered newsworthy?

The British media is f*cked beyond all hope!
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

If you want to talk about less distractions this should help the boys grades to be fair I would imagine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stupid rules. they dont want short skirts so they ban all skirts. when a few kids will come in with short/torn trousers, will they ban all trousers, what then? Come to school in full length cardboard boxes?
why not just ban short shirts in the first place?

I imagine most people would actually see that form of dress as a threat so more of a distraction (btw, not a religeous comment - simply a statement of fact - a hoodie would likely be perceived the same way)

I've a mate who's a teacher and he admits some of the girls take the pis@ with skirt length. They put their hands up as if to ask a question and when he looks their way they splay their legs and start giggling. I know it's a laugh but you'll always get one nutter that takes it too far.

They should look on it more as a lesson that in life there's rules to be followed and if you don't follow them you suffer. Simple.

oddly enough the school is in breach. There is no way they can enforce a trousers only rule. It's most likely that the school are attempting to apply something that is against the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. The school will lose and for this the taxpayer will foot the bill. Excellent use of public money.
