TWO shafts of light are fired into the sky above New York as the city prepares to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.
The Tribute in Light ? tested last night ? shoots 40ft wide beams into the air from roughly where The World Trade Center once stood.
The powerful searchlights have lit up the night sky every year since the 2001 atrocity to remember the 2,976 innocent lives lost that day.
A decade on from the worst terrorist attack in history some, including the city's Mayor Michael Bloomberg, are urging Americans to move on from calling the site of the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan 'Ground Zero'.
Mr Bloomberg said this week: "We will never forget the devastation of the area that came to be known as Ground Zero. Never.
"But the time has come to call those 16 acres what they are - The World Trade Centre and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum."
For several years the site was also known as "the pit" because of the large hole left in the ground while plans were made for new buildings. Two of four planned skyscrapers are now under construction.
The Mayor added: "The rebirth and revitalisation of Lower Manhattan will be remembered as one of the greatest comeback stories in American history."
