News International offers Milly Dowler's family ?3m settlement

Negotiations continuing on settlement understood to include personal ?1m donation to charity by Rupert Murdoch

Milly Dowler's family have been made a ?3m offer by Rupert Murdoch's News International in an attempt to settle the phone-hacking case that led to the closure of the News of the World and the resignation of the company's chief executive, Rebekah Brooks.

The money on the table is understood to include a personal ?1m donation to charity by Murdoch himself as well as contributions to the family's legal costs. But the publisher has not yet reached final agreement with the Dowler family, whose lawyers were thought to be seeking a settlement figure closer to ?3.5m.

The seven-figure sums under negotiation are far larger than other phone-hacking settlements reached ? and amount to one of the largest payouts ever made by a newspaper owner ? reflecting the fact that the phone-hacking case affected a family who were victims of crime.

Milly Dowler went missing aged 13 in March 2002 and was later found murdered.

I would only settle not less then 5m?????..
Would you all agree for that 3m settlement?

It's amazing how money can buy off someones standards. I've yet to hear one person who's phone has been hacked refusing to be bought off and asking for those involved to be jailed instead.

This was a very sad story and hacking over a dead young girl was well over the human respect??????.

How can they even think about hacking the family already moaning about there daughter?

Blood Money. In todays broken Britain you will find many who would sell their souls and their children for 2 million.

There are a couple. Steve Coogan springs to mind.

Just a thought but what as this got to do with someone's standards. The NoW made millions of pounds of the back of phone hacking why should they be allowed to profit from a crime they committed. And as for people having to ask for those involved to be jailed, should it not be down to the police to prosecute those who committed the crime.

Money should play no part in any punishment. News International is worth Billions so any fine is about as effective as a fly trying to crush a human. Basically what they are trying to do is prove they can do what the want and just throw money at it. In other words just give the green light to those with money to do what they want then buy there freedom.

W?hy is it that when RICH peeps get caught red handed committing crimes, they just pay money to stay out of jail,
But when poor peeps get caught they end up in prison.
Just goes to show "money talks."
What happens to the "The law is the law & no one is above the law." & "In the inerest of justice."

What these people did, to sell papers, was absolutely disgusting.
All in charge should be thrown in prison.
SLOWLY, OUR FREEDOM IS BEING ERASED.
SOON, WE WILL JUST BE A NUMBER.
IF WE DON'T FOLLOW, WE WILL BE ERASED.
