Ken Clarke accuses Theresa May of 'laughable and child-like' claims
The Justice Secretary said that Mrs May had infuriated both senior judges and Government advisers with her claims that the Act meant an illegal immigrant had escaped deportation because he had a pet cat
Mrs May told party members: ?We all know the stories about the Human Rights Act: the violent drug dealer who cannot be sent home because his daughter ? for whom he pays no maintenance ? lives here; the robber who cannot be removed because he has a girlfriend.?
She added: ?The illegal immigrant who cannot be deported because ? and I am not making this up ? he had a pet cat.?
It later emerged that, while the cat was mentioned in a deportation hearing, it was family issues that were paramount in the decision.
The Coalition has asked an independent commission to review the Act.
