Thousands could be homeless by Christmas

Every two minutes between now and Christmas Day, someone in Britain will face the prospect of losing their home. That's the finding of new research from the housing charity Shelter, highlighting the struggles the property market still faces.

According to the charity's research, around 35,000 people face a battle to keep a roof over their head in time for Santa's arrival.

The charity has launched a campaign to highlight the plight of the hundreds of people each day who will receive a letter threatening them with homelessness, and the impact such an experience can have on their mental health.

Shelter's research found that 61% of people who have either been homeless or faced the threat of homelessness said it had led directly to a stress related illness.

    Repossession, repossession, repossession

Many years ago homes used to cost what they are worth.

But for the profiteering to get on what is called the housing ladder, prices have escalated way beyond their true value.

The idea of houses as investments which depended on rising house prices continued, senselessly.

Now it?s gone so far that people cannot afford to keep paying for them. Banks don?t care, so as our Govt, they only pretend to.

When you come to a stage that you can not pay your mortgage, your house gets repossessed.

I hop banks will have heart over the Christmas period and let the poor people spend Christmas with there family.

Repossessions are changing to styles seen in the U.S. where the current tenants are allowed to maintain their residence if they maintain the residence. "Keep it in order and you can stay on us for the foreseeable future."

Another program is one where the evicted tenants are paid for leaving the property in decent shape, not trashed.

Banks and lenders seem to be becoming more generous in the terms of foreclosure in the last quarter or two. It is not in their interests to have a property sit vacant for extended periods of time as an unused house deteriorates rapidly. An added benefit of the "generosity" is less bad publicity (which almost equates to good publicity.)

the politicians etc who think we are not in a recession are deluded. interest rates cant go any lower and people are still struggling to pay their mortgages. what on earth are they going to do when interest rates start to rise?

In order to become a Big Issue vendor an individual must prove that they are homeless or vulnerably housed, undergo an induction process and sign up to the code of conduct. Once they have done so they are allocated a fixed pitch and issued with 5 free copies of the magazine (or 10 in London). Once they have sold these magazines they can purchase further copies, which they buy for ?1 and sell for ?2, thereby making ?1 per copy.

If their homes get repossessed, there are plenty of properties on the rental Market. Also, don't you get bumped up the council housing list if your homeless?

I don't understand how some people can face homelessness, yet single teenage mothers and their boyfriends live in 3 bedroom homes and have never worked a day in their lives.
