Pet dog is stabbed 21 times...

    ... and lives

Recovery ... Dempsey, with owner Lauren Wilkinson, is getting better after horrific attack

COPS are hunting thugs who stabbed a pet dog 21 TIMES after breaking into a teen girl's flat.

Dempsey, a 'loving and gentle' Staffordshire bull terrier, was tossed over a garden fence and left to die after the barbaric attack.

He was found just in time and rushed to a PDSA hospital for three-hour surgery which saved his life.

Vets said injuries to his pancreas and diaphragm were the worst they had ever seen.

Owner Claire Wilkinson said Dempsey had been staying with her 19-year-old daughter Lauren at the time of the attack in Bournemouth, Dorset.

She came home from a night out to find her flat ransacked with a trail of blood leading through it and six-year-old Dempsey missing.

Neighbours who heard the commotion helped her search for the dog and found him whimpering in a nearby garden.

Police were called and they sped him to his emergency treatment. Dempsey incredibly pulled through and is now recovering at home with Claire, 38.

She said: "I just can't accept that somebody could do something like that to such a loving and gentle dog.

"There was blood all over the place and you could see where he had been cowering in the corner of the bathroom.

"They put him through this horrific ordeal - we didn't think he would last the night.

"He's a proper family dog - he's never been aggressive. I look at him now and I can't help but think about how he must have suffered.

"I just can't imagine the trauma he has been through."

Uwe Holz, senior veterinary surgeon at Bournemouth PDSA PetAid hospital, said: "I have treated a small number of stab injuries previously, but this is by far the worst case I have ever seen.

"The operation to repair Dempsey's wounds lasted over two hours but thankfully it was a success."

Claire said she wanted to thank everyone who had helped rescue Dempsey.

She added: "I cannot praise them enough.

The police were fantastic, they acted so promptly in taking him to the PDSA when he was in a critical condition.

"The staff at the PDSA were absolutely brilliant, their dedication was just remarkable and it's down to that that he is still with us now.

    I'm so grateful."

Lauren's flat was trashed and many of her possessions were damaged but nothing was stolen in the raid.

Cops are appealing to anyone with information about it to contact them.

        thats so sad, poor dog.

Would it not be in the dogs best interest for him to be put down? Poor thing would have constant nightmares and surely would just end up a wreck thinking everytime the door opened, it would be the attacker?
