Doctors Demand Ban On Smoking In Private Cars

Doctors have called for a ban on smoking in cars claiming it exposes people to 23 times more toxins than used to be found in pubs.

The British Medical Association briefing paper has claimed children are at highest risk from second-hand smoke because they absorb more pollutants.

The new briefing paper , also said the elderly are vulnerable to respiratory problems caused by passive smoking.

Dr Vivienne Nathanson, Director of Professional Activities, said smoking causes over 80,000 deaths every year in England.

"The UK made a huge step forward in the fight against tobacco by banning smoking in all enclosed public places, but more can still be done.

"We are calling on UK governments to take the bold and courageous step of banning smoking in private vehicles.

The evidence for extending the smoke-free legislation is compelling."

Earlier this week Northern Ireland Health Minister Edwin Poots said he is considering a ban on smoking in cars.

    I call this dictatorial regime.

Am fed up of being dictated to because i smoke, ~~~~ed off outside in the pub, restaurant etc. Treated like second class citizens because of the choice we make to smoke. These people who call for it to be banned need to realise that if it IS banned, then the government will want all that lost revenue from fag tax from SOMEWHERE ELSE....
cue council tax, road tax, petrol tax, income tax, beer tax.. ALL going up to make up for the loss of revenue from smokers..
All you non smokers should be thanking us smokers for putting our lives on the line for this country
    Fave replies from various threads

1: What the fff is all that about??? All that crap below your reply I mean, get a life mate
2: no info on google abt the pace sv5 rang asda they have no idea what i was talking about,
3: Your total contribution to this forum, bordering on trolling, seems to have been a collection of snipes, one liners & asterisked expletives

I can see the reason behind banning it when there are others in the vehicle especially children. Sadly looking on the news there are a lot of selfish individuals that don't give a shi@ about the health of their children. I wonder how they'd feel if they had to sit at the bedside of their kids and watch them die of smoking related illnesses.

I can also see the rights people have to smoke themselves to death and to smell like a mixture of cats piss and twigletts. If that's what they want crack on.

I just wish the Governments would have the balls to completely ban the use of any Cancer causing chemicals in the production of Cigarettes. They stamp down on health and safety forcing people to wear seat belts, not to talk on mobiles whilsrt driving. Restrict alcohol intake etc. All in the name of saving lives yet still give the green light to Joe Public poisoning themselves and the innocent people around them. If a food producer put even one of these chemicals in their food it would be banned outright. WTF.

do the maths, about 8bn in revenue from baccy fags, about 4bn to treat smoking related illnesses. ~~~~ing gov wont be happy till we have no choices left in life and if they where serious about stopping peeps smoking they would ban tobacco out right ? to much money involved thats why, and why not make these e-cigarettes available on the nhs ? they are the best thing going to help stop peeps smoking.

i don't smoke, and to be honest it doesn't bother me people smoking, i think most people have the sense not to smoke around kids anyway,

the smoking ban in pubs didn't bother me either, but it is quite nice to come home after an evening out and not stink of someone else's smoke

i think the ban of smoking in the work place and pubs was to stop individuals claiming compensation off the government if they got ill due to smoking related diseases

its illegal to smoke with kids in cars isn't it?

I hate smoking, its not attractive (well my partner in a tux smoking was hot, but i was pretty intoxicated too, and hes only worn a tuxedo once so that was a rare occasion ) but he doesn't smoke in the house.

I hate seeing pregnant women smoking, or people smoking whilst pushing rear facing prams...they are the ones who should be fined, blowing smoke directly at their kids.

Not technically, but the police can use The Highway Code revised rule 148 to bring a charge of careless driving, or "not being in a position to control the vehicle" if a driver in a private car is smoking.

148: Safe driving and riding needs concentration.

Avoid distractions when driving or riding such as:

loud music (this may mask other sounds)
                trying to read maps
inserting a cassette or CD or tuning a radio
                eating and drinking
                smoking

From staying safe on the road to fuel advice and driving abroad, here's everything drivers need to know.

So what about two women having a conversation, one driving one passenger, so into their conversation that the driver is lost all awareness of her surroundings and only paying about 10 % attention to the road. I've seen that loads of times, that's more dangerous to kids and all other people wether they be on the road or the footpath

                      not necessarily.

Most people with kids who smoke would do it outside (i hope) or in another room at least.

Whereas in cars people assume if you put down the window to smoke it goes out the window, which isn't the case, in effect it actually gets blown inside to the back of the car where the kids are sat.

I used to go out with a lass that 'had' to look at the person she was talking to. Being in a car when she was driving was one of the most terrifying experiances of my life so far.
It amazes me that she's still alive. She crashed into a central reservation while using her mobile in a torrential down pour. Almost killed me when she took an S-bend way to fast & nearly leveled a lamp post into to passenger side of the car.

                        Scary stuff.

im an ex smoker and didnt believe how bad i smelt when i was smoking. i used to spray deodorant and eat polo mints to disguise the smell but its only since i became an ex smoker 10 yrs ago i realised it didnt work. i dont let anyone smoke in my house or car. it does annoy me when in a taxi and it reeks of smoke and the driver is puffing away with the window down. however if you are in your own car with no one else and you want to smoke you should be able to do so same at home.

when i was a smoker i used to say but what about all the crap that goes into the air from cars etc

yes shady you do have the right to smoke but you dont have the right to submit others to the fumes etc

You can get fined for smoking in a works vehicle. One of my mates that works for Dyno Secure in Glasgow got hit with a fixed penalty fine last year as his van was classed as a place of work.

I am a Heavy Smoker but I dont smoke in my car , I dont smoke when there are people around me that are non smokers , I always go into another room to smoke when my grandkids are visiting me.

I just get fed up when I hear that some jumped up government official wants to ban something that is actually funding their job.

                              End of Rant..............
