    The risks of using Paypal

Is Paypal really the safer, easier way to pay online?

How does Paypal work?Instead of sharing your payment details with an unknown retailer, if the website allows Paypal payments, you can effectively use Paypal as a middleman. So Paypal - which prides itself on being a brand you know and can trust - takes your payment and passes it on to the retailer without sharing any of your sensitive financial information.

All sounds great, doesn't it? But if there's one thing I've learnt over the years working for lovemoney.com, it's this: when it comes to financial transactions, it pays to be aware of the small print.

Does Paypal actually offer extra protection?
If you pay for an item costing ?100 or more using your credit card, you are protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. So if the retailer goes bust, fails to deliver the goods or the goods it supplies are not up to scratch, you have the statutory right to compensation from your credit card provider.

But this statutory right does NOT apply if you pay for something on your credit card via Paypal. In this case, the very safeguard you sought - having a middleman - means you no longer have a direct, legal contract with your credit card provider.

Instead, you will have to make a claim for compensation with Paypal. And that means Paypal gets to decide whether your dispute is valid. You no longer have the protection of the law.

Having said that, Paypal does offer some protection under its 'Buyer Protection' scheme. It states that it will 'help you' if you didn't receive the item you paid for with Paypal or you received an item that is 'significantly not as described'. However, there are eligibility requirements you must meet:

? You must have paid the full amount in a single payment, not multiple payments, like a deposit followed by a final payment. (Under Section 75, you can put down a ?1 deposit on your credit card and pay the remaining balance by another means, and still make a claim.)

? You must open a dispute within 45 days of the date you sent the payment, and follow the online dispute resolution process on the Paypal website. (You get up to six years under Section 75.)

Both of these restrictions make using Paypal worse than buying direct from the online merchant with your credit card - if the item costs more than ?100. This distinction is important. If the item costs less than ?100, you don't get any special statutory protection from your credit card provider.

However, even then, you'd have more protection if you paid with a Visa or MasterCard debit card, rather than with Paypal. This is because your bank will allow you 120 days to make a claim after realising there's a problem with your purchase under its debit card Chargeback scheme. You can also make a claim for fraud and unauthorised use of your card under the Chargeback scheme.

Watch out for Paypal scamsAnother thing that puts me off Paypal is the way that it can take money out of your account if it believes it has a valid reason - even if you're a victim of a scam.

Basically if you sell something online and the buyer contacts Paypal and asks for their money back, Paypal could agree to refund the money without even checking with you whether you sent the goods and the buyer's claim is valid. If you've already legitimately withdrawn the cash, it could even start threatening you with debt collection proceedings.

This has affected several lovemoney.com readers (including Mrs C and anamou) but it's obviously only a problem if you sell stuff online via Paypal.

Paypal are the biggest rip off merchants I have ever come across.

When they want to take your money they will end up forcing you to phone them from abroad risking high phone bills.

I do not like to deal with any company I have an issue with the customer service.

Let us know about your experiences with Paypal.

Been using it since 2002 without any problems whatsoever. I've had a few disputes along the way that have been settled promptly. As long as you follow their guidelines and employ basic common sense you should be ok.

I've just ran into a problem with paypal themselves.

Placed an order with my parts supplier & paid with paypal, just to make things easier.

The order was cancelled by the supplier & refund given within an hour. No email or contact to tell me why.
So the next working day I checked their stock levels & ordered again... Same thing happened.
I emailed them & found out they didn't like sending orders to private address & had to go to a business address.

        Fine, problem solved. Yeah right!

Paypal had taken two payments from my bank account, paid the supplier, who refunded within an hour.....paypal then decided to put a 'tempory hold' on the refund & 'someone will be in touch'.
Wishfull dreaming. I had to contact them. I've been told it will take at least 7 working days to refund my money back into my paypal account.

        Why?

They have my money. The supplier doesn't want it. Nothing has left the paypal system. It's a ~~~~ing joke!

While this is going on I can't order any more parts as I've got a large sum of money locked away by paypal I can't access. There's not enough in the bank account to cover the order.

canker, you have my sympathies, dealing with these people is like banging your head against the wall.

i had several run ins with paypal over their temporary restrictions to my account, buyers were being given their refunds via paypal without contacting me first or using the dispute console which is supposed to be an arbitrary service.

eventually got sick of phoning them and arguing the toss.so much so that i will not sell through the site at all

i used to be a heavy user via ebay (you must accept paypal as a payment method to sell) others also tried to con but i checked with other sellers at the same time and the buyer had also put in paypal claims against them so i contacted the local police of the conman and advised him to drop the claims and he did. i always get proof of postage from post office (free and covers approx ?41) in case anything gets lost??? then i can claim from the royal mail as the proof of postage is not good enough for paypal they want proof of reciept like recorded or registered and still they can refund the buyer (i lost when sending tracked to germany) and my mate lost when he sent recorded as have many others. for the same reasons i find its the safest way of paying though.

the whole experience was towards the end like swimming with sharks in my opinion, even proof of posting like footycard stated was not enough to pacify pay pal and they always sided with the buyer.

OK so you all agreed to paypal agreements.

Paypal will pay you ?2.00 into your account and you agreed paypal to access to withdraw that ?2.00 I lend you from your account or else take your business some were else.

When you get in a bit of a bother they will turn around and withdraw ?250.00 no question asked.

If this is not a scam business you agreed with then what is?
