?10m cost of turning off wind farms

Wind farm operators are on course to earn up to ?10***8201;million this year for turning off their turbines.

Official figures disclosed that 17 operators were paid almost ?7***8201;million for shutting down their farms on almost 40 occasions between January and mid-September. Continuing to make payments at that rate would lead to householders paying out ?9.9***8201;million in 2011 for operators to disconnect their turbines from the National Grid.

The scale of the payments triggered a review of the rules on so-called constraint payments. The payments are made when too much electricity floods the grid, with the network unable to absorb any excess power generated. The money is ultimately added on to household bills and paid for by consumers.

Last year, only ?176,788 of such payments were made, but changes in the way the National Grid, which supplies energy to retail companies, ***8220;balances***8221; the electricity network have meant a huge expansion in their use.

The rules meant that some renewable energy companies were paid more to switch off their turbines than they would have received from ordinary operations.

In September, it was disclosed that ?1.2***8201;million would go to a Norwegian company that owned 60 turbines in the Scottish Borders,

    Let me get this right!!!!!!!!!!

Becouse they were producing too much electricity that floods the grid therefore they had to shut down their farms on almost 40 occasions costing people bills to go up.

I thought we were taliking about renewable energy so why our govt is spending another thounsads on solar panels?

I wish it was a joke

We should ask our MP why we have to pay extra on top of our bill.

This is why wind farms are stupid.

In an ideal world it would be ideal to turn the coal power stations off. and keep only the turbines running.

But.. with wind its not predictable, if the above was done. we would have powercuts when the wind dies down..

Get rid of turbines and get rid of this puppet parliament which is a democracy. Which clearly it isn't, because there hasn't been public consultation.

Grr, wish i never read this joke of a thread now.. my blood is boiling.

On that basics I can not see any deferent between wind not predictable and sun not predictable when solar panels produce electricity?s when we live in a country we hardly see sun for more then 4 months in a year???

Why can not we just stick to nuclear power?

Exactly, nuclear would be the better option, but there will always be the chance of a chinoble

These problems are caused by people outside the power industry not understanding how it all works.

Coal power is the main source in this country. You can't just turn them off, it takes too long to get them going again.
So when demand is low the eco power is shut off.
But if demand suddenly peaks they turn to gas turbines to cover the extra power needed. Eco power is always the last used.

Coming up with a payment plan to compensate the eco companies for not using their power was just stupid. But then so was siging up to an agreement to use unpredictable eco power sources.
