Well cable i totally disagree with the whole license fee thing and think that they should be self sufficient as we have so much choice nowadays. However if i have to pay a license fee to have a tv in my house whether i watch the bbc or not the i think its only fair that the money should be shared out equally with all other service providers of television programmes.

well if you like your tv interuppted every 5 minutes so you can be bombarded with shite adverts then crack on,personally i dont want that,,i do agree the bbc could be improved a lot and the funds that scumbag murdoch is taking could be better spent on content etc
i used to have a dbox which allowed me many channels,,the one thing that always pished me off was the advertising,,so in that sense the beeb is good,

You only have to pay the license fee if you use your TV to watch or record "live" broadcast channels, that means if you watch or record ANY channel as it's being broadcast.

You DO NOT need a license just to have a TV in your home.

If you only watch iplayer, 4od, itvplayer (or any equivalent) or use your TV for watching DVD's or downloaded content then you DO NOT need a license.

If you have a sky box or cable box then you need a license because these boxes are only made to receive a live broadcast signal, regardless of the actual channels you watch.

We haven't paid the TV tax for a few years, our cable box is unplugged, but our TV does have a freeview tuner but does not have an aerial plugged in.

All the relevant info is printed on the back of your license or can be found here - TV Licensing - Check if you need a TV Licence

The UK TV tax is one of the lowest in Europe, Austria's is 335 euro which includes money for the radio, in Turkey they take 2% of your electricity bill plus also an indirect charge on appliences. The Swiss pay 360 euro. But some countries like Spain, Ukraine, Hungry, Cyrus and Netherland don't pay a penny.

The license started in 1927 by Royal Charter (well before Murdoch's empire began) and was for radio (BBC being the only broadcaster at the time) it was amended in 1946 to include TV. The licence fee is classified as a tax, and evasion is a criminal offence.

In the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies, any household watching or recording live television transmissions as they are broadcast is required to purchase a television licence every year. As of 2010, this costs ?145.50 for colour and ?49.00 for black and white.[1] The licence is required to receive any live television transmission, whether it is received via terrestrial, satellite, cable, or the Internet. A licence is not and never has been required simply to possess a TV set, for the purpose of watching pre-recorded content, or use as a monitor for video games or computers. Although income from the licence is primarily used to fund the television, radio and online services of the BBC, a licence is needed to watch all broadcast channels live, including live commercial services. Total levies from the licence fee were ?3.662 billion in 2010-11[2] of which ?579.4 million or 15.8% was provided by the Government through concessions for those over the age of 75.
            Licence fee expenditure

The BBC Trust gives the following information for expenditure of licence fee income during the year 2009-10 of ?3.56 billion[13] (expressed here in percentage terms):
            • 66% ; All TV
            • 17% ; National and local radio
            • 6% ; Online e.g. BBC websites, iPlayer
            • 11% ; Other e.g. transmission and licence fee collection costs*

To date, the BBC World Service on radio and BBC Arabic Television have been funded by a grant from the government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, not the licence fee, whilst S4C receives a fixed annual grant from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport; however, it was announced in October 2010, that these grants will be funded from licence fee by 2015.[14]
BBC World News and the BBC's other international television channels are operated commercially and will continue to not receive licence fee money. The revenues they generate supplement the licence fee in financing the UK services.
In addition, the BBC Alba Gaelic language television service is predominantly funded by MG Alba, an organisation funded by the Scottish Government.
(*) During 2006, the BBC stated that 5.2% of the licence fee was spent on collection and enforcement (exclusive of transmission costs).[15]

                    Glad you brought this issue???..

It?s the revenue our govt is after from the public.

I will give you an example; few years ago on radio there were documentary talks about were our money was going when we pay for road tax.

It has been confirmed that not 1 penny is spent for road tax we pay, why our govt has been lying?

Answers to your question are the revenue you like it or not.

                      Bit confused here.

Wherever I drive, particularly on motorways, there always seem to be miles of roadworks, with heavy plant shuttling up and down.

Where is the money coming from if the government aren't providing it?

(I know the answer btw. It's a rhetorical question.)

Don?t ask me, ask the experts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suppose we have more then 100 million cars on the road in UK, now multiply by the lowest figure 100 millions multiply by ?100=?

Is that the money our govt use every year on motorway?

Gonna be slightly different here in Ireland. We've paid a tv licence to our public broadcaster RTE for years, for shite tv.
You only had to pay if you had a tv in the house.

However, now the licence will be scrapped, and a new "Broadcasting Charge" will be implemented, whether you've got a tv or not.Every single house in the country has to pay it.It's to cover all media,ie,smartphones,pc's,etc, anything that can receive a broadcast signal !!

If implented here, won't be too long coming down your tracks subsequently.

Creative bunch of fuds we have now running things.Weren't so ~~~~ing smart though to prevent all of this when they handed the deeds of the country over to Merkin and that little c**ksucker from Frogench Land(Thanks Meaty !).
Aaahh ! I love the smell of Eeprom in the morning...

" We'll come in low out of the rising sun, and about a mile out, we'll put on the music . . . "
