    Echelon ended many years ago but the basic principles still live on. All international communications from the UK are routinely monitored, initially for connection details and, if the connection is deemed interesting, then for content. This includes telephone (both mobile and landline) and internet.

    For internet communications, huge datlists are created of all source/destination Ip addresses that pass through the main international choke-points which are effectively controlled by GCHQ.

    btw, the UK Govt has the capability to turn off pretty much all international communications if they feel the need. They can isolate the UK in exactly the same way as every other country.
