Maybe I'm naive but I had no idea this was going on, I've heard of programs like Freenet to hide your anonymity for file sharing, but the ability to buy guns, drugs etc, online is surprising and shocking.

interesting that this has come up at exactly the same time that ACTA is trying to be rolled out to curtail your internet freedom

if you watch the BBC news report you'll see they where able to buy class A drugs off the net,
not everything is a conspiracy, and I aint scared,
the whole point of the report was to highlight there are thing out there that the government cant do anything about,
even the Chinese authorities cant stop there own citizens blogging.
and just out of curiosity, what's ACTA got to do with it, that's for counterfeit goods, this is about buying drugs etc.

You lot have got no idea.

I've been delving on the 'deep web' for a few weeks now and it's unbelievable what you can find. Hired assassins, drug dealers, arms/weaponry etc...
The drugs website is called Silk Road.

The surface web that everyone thinks of through Google etc. is only actually 16% of the whole internet.



Pretty much anything is available IF you know how to get on there.

Do a google search for 'hiddenwiki' if you want start learning.

And another thing, and THIS IS IMPORTANT

If any of you decide to have a look around there then TURN OFF IMAGES IN YOUR BROWSER.

There is a shit-load of CP and CP images. Never seen anything myself but I was well warned beforehand to make sure images were turned off. I know people though who have clicked on what they thought was a seemingly innocent website and were met with some of the most disturbing pics they've ever seen.

True but to be honest there is really no reason for the normal person to be visiting .onion domains. Nothing good can come of it.

With that said, the average person doesn't have access to the true "deep web" as in you need to know people and passwords to access the .onion sites that are really worthwhile for criminals and political dissidents. No true criminal organization is going to let themselves be known by any Joe Schmo with 15 minutes free time to install Tor and start aimlessly browsing.

Browsing the Hidden Wiki and sites like it is browsing the surface of the deep web, you won't get into the true deep web unless you are very well acquainted with certain people and are already involved in some sketchy activity. It's also important to note that the deep web isn't all full of assassins and drugs and stuff-- a lot of it is just useless boring information regarding programming and the likes.
Not to say there isn't some bad stuff. I've read some REALLY bad stuff on there regarding human experimentation and there was a site that dealt with killing people and the best ways to cook various body parts.
It was like Gordon Ramsey meets Dennis Nilsen.

Hidden Wiki is to be avoided to be honest. A lot of their links will take you to CP without any warning.

99% of the links will take you where you want but not without warning. The 1% that is of any value is hidden beneath any "hidden wiki".

Not 99% and yes some of them will. People will go blundering around on there and just start clicking links. There ARE lots of dodgy links from hidden wiki.

I was talking about CP links. I wouldn't describe them as 'of any value' as I'm not that way inclined.

As cablefreejunkie said though, it's not for the faint hearted.
