Ministers To 'Approve Compulsory Water Meters'

The Government is planning to make household water meters compulsory, according to a report.

Ministers are said to be on the verge of agreeing to a request from Thames Water to install metering across the board. If that happens, other companies are expected to follow suit.

The firm told Sky News it was not aware that an announcement is imminent, but spokesman Simon Evans said that if a report in the Sunday Times is true it would be "excellent news".

Mr Evans stressed there is no connection between a possible decision and the current drought , insisting the company has been lobbying for blanket metering since 2008.

But Thames Water says there is strong evidence that installing water meters does lead to reduce consumption.

The average usage in a unmetered home is 170 litres per person each day, but the figure falls to around 140 litres when a meter is installed.

Currently around 30% of Thames Water customers have meters - the company is aiming for 80% by 2025.

Campaign group Waterwise said it would welcome the introduction of blanket metering saying that it would help to alleviate current water shortages.

Sounds like a win win situation for the water companies.

If this is eventually pushed onto everyone in the country then millions will be forced to cut back on the amount of water they use. But then the companies profits will plummet so they will just put up the prices anyway!
The cost of water will eventually cost more than the way it is now so the water companies will be quids in.

People who are on water meters now may be paying less but wait till everyone in the country has one.

I moved into a new build back in 1993 upon which Yorkshire Water insisted that all new houses are fitted with a meter. A few years later they wrote and asked me if I wanted to go on the rateable value instead. Not a chance.

They'll get everyone on a meter and then hike the price. Watch this space for the "I told you so" line in a few years.. Profits before customers seems to be the name of the game.

one good idea to reduce water usage would be grants for every one to have a shower fitted, theres nothing worse than baths for wasting water, ( except using hose pipe for the garden ) ive been on a meter for years my bill is ?14 month,i also water the garden with hose pipe in summer, but theres only 2 of us, compulsory water meters will hit the large families fairly hard i think. dish washers also must waste water ( and electric ) compared to doing them in the sink.

Yeah, ok water meter fine, but if your going to install it, then you can shit a shit meter on the sweage first.

Well, if you read the article, it's suggesting that those are the only people likely to get any benefit from the water meters. It's not advocating them in any way, but instead saying these types of people are likely to benefit

Thousands of people won't however benefit. If we were to go by that rule of thumb, we wouldn't benefit from a water meter
