Extreme weather: UK set to experience one month?s rain in five days

The April washout is set to continue as forecasters predict a month?s worth of rainfall will fall in five days across many parts of Britain.

The monthly average rainfall for April is 54mm for the UK as a whole. April 2012 is now on course to be the wettest since 2000.

Forecasters are warning that total rainfall could exceed 60mm in southern counties of England and the north east of Scotland as a system of low pressure from the Atlantic lingers over Britain.

Hosepipe bans are initiated by regional water authorities, not by government.

It would also need substantially more rain than is currently forecast for the reservoirs to reach normal levels.

I said it when the hose pipe bans were announced, & I'll say it again..... Can't wait for the excuses the water companies come up with when the south is flooded.

I thought that it was the Environment Agency which made the decisions on hosepipe bans. Never mind the last time we had a months rain in a week here the city flooded. Mind you I got a motorbike at half price the last time that happened, bring on the rain

Environment Agency - What we're doing

Who are we going to believe?

We have the rainiest weather in UK then any other country in the world and we just have to ban water pipes when the rain keeps poring and I regret to say that we may come to a situation that our houses may be flooded because of water restrictions.

You forget Defra who own the policies on drought orders. From what I've read (and I don't even know why I'm bothering, so gave up in the end) The water companies can impose temporary bans without asking. To have drought orders/bans for any great length of time the water companies must ask DEFRA, who own the policies. DEFRA in turn rely on the Environment Agency for information, as do the water companies. So I'm sure it's nice and confusing at any given time as to why or who imposed the ban.

As for floods in the city I live in, everyone blamed everyone else and got away with it quite nicely so that in the end everyone gave up on trying to find out what really happened. Needless to say I was travelling home last Friday through the city and the gulleys were blocked up and the roads flooding. The council being what it is won't bother to clear the gulleys, since "no-one" expects it to rain that much....
