Proud pensioner told to remove 'excessive' Diamond Jubilee flags

Derek Birch, 72, was told he would have to take down 14 flags which he had put up outside his flat or he'd be charged for the cost of their removal.

His landlord, Flagship Housing, says the number of flags on display is "excessive" and gave Derek a week to take them down, claiming they are damaging the property.

But the pensioner says the decision is "ridiculous" and he will not remove the 3ft by 5ft flags - despite breaching the deadline.

The lifelong bachelor, of Newmarket, Suffolk, has vowed to stand his ground and take his fight to court if necessary.

Derek, a retired civil servant, who has lived in the property for six years, said: "It is ridiculous.

"It's the Jubilee - it's only once in a lifetime. I will probably never live to see another big state occasion.

    "The flags are harmless.
"All I want is to let the flags fly until the end of the Jubilee celebrations and then they will come down.

"I was born and bred in this country, lived in Newmarket all my life. This isn't the country I was brought up in, I can tell you. It's not harming anybody, putting flags out.

"It is like a dictatorship. There is no community spirit anymore.

"I am not taking them down I am standing my ground. I will defy their order. They will have to get a court order for me to take them down and then they will look really silly.

"They say the flags are damaging the property but they are not."

The council **** who ordered this should be marched from office and have The Jack tattooed on his forehead to forever remind him where he's from

OK, so can somebody zoom on them flags please.

            1) If the flags are made in Ingland, fine let them stay
            2) If the flags are made out of Ingland - like China - then rip them down and shove them up the blokes arse

            OFF TOPIC:-

Why can't there be a law stating only the Union Jack can be made in Ingland?

It doesn't say that the pensioner should remove them because it offends any one. If any thing, what offends me is that people make up laws thinking that it offends me. That offends me

I don't see what's wrong with the guy removing them after the jubilee ceremony tbf

It says nothing about offending any one. It's the landlord saying that it causes damage to his property. They both have a point, however I do agree with the pensioner when he says that they'll come down after the jubilee event

Mainly because it's the landlords house, so you have to follow the landlord's rules, however I see no wrong if the pensioner removes the flag after the jubilee event or if he moves before that

I mean, in our student house, we're not allowed to put up a dish. Full stop. It's not exactly a flag, but it still "damages the property" so no dish

That would be a protectionist and uneconomical policy - presumably the gov't would have to subsidise the sale of flags. Welcome to capitalism

It's not the council who ordered this. It's the ironically named "Flagship Housing" company

Damage to the property? I see a Sat dish and what looks like an antenna bolted to his side of the building. Isn't that destroying the building? I really hate Liberals they always have their nose up someones ass.

Yes, however the housing company could argue that it's one small dish, and by offering a satellite dish to be bolted on, it gets them people in

By that, I assume you take the "they're offending people" argument. Scroll up, to see my response to that. Also, it's the housing company who made the rules, not any one else. I'll call myself "liberal", but that's only because I lean to the left socially and lean to the right economically, so I suppose I'm centrist in that regard

Presumably you're being sarcastic, however if you did argue that case, those arguments would be in favour of the housing company, and giving them more reason not to allow the flags

I think it's more of the fact that the more attachments your house has got, the more it detracts value from your house. However I agree with the pensioner that he'll remove them after the Jubilee event
