    Free Country??

So when when it's not possible to extradite people who are wanted criminals, even those that hate the UK (but stay here because it's nice and safe to do so) those that are innocent have more to to fear

The Metropolitan Police has implemented a system to extract mobile phone data from suspects held in custody.

The data includes call history, texts and contacts, and the BBC has learned that it will be retained regardless of whether any charges are brought.

    Full story here.

BBC News - Met Police to extract suspects***039; mobile phone data

So even though you are innocent they keep all the records, nice to know that we're all free...... and sleepwalking into 1984

As if criminals take out contract phones anyway, well other than taking them form robbery victims.

What gave you the idea the UK was a free country ?

We have no written constitution guaranteeing us any particular right but rather a series of loose 'prior judgements' (giving us precedence) and parliamentary statutes (laws). Because of this, its theoretically possible for parliament to change pretty much anything they choose without having to worry about whether that change would be constitutional !

If the UK Govt have implemented laws to allow varoius authorities to collect and hold certain information then there's little we can really do about it as we have no constitutional guarantee that this cant happen.

Of course we do get the illusion of choosing a new dictator every few years but is choosing from a very small pool of like minded individuals really much of a choice ?

              Very true.
The UK doesn't have a codified constitution. They government rule by parliamentary sovereignty which allows them to overrule fundamental rights.
              To put it simply:
              • Parliament can make laws concerning anything.
              • No Parliament can bind a future parliament (that is, it cannot pass a law that cannot be changed or reversed by a future Parliament).
              • A valid Act of Parliament cannot be questioned by the court. Parliament is the supreme lawmaker.

European law doesn't even recognise the British concept of parliamentary supremacy so it's all a bit of a joke really.
As TheCoder said, like it or not you can't do anything about it.

Maybe it is free country. After all the powers in charge don't pay to collect our data :-)
