Well that's not good news. We don't want them going the same way that ITV Digital / OnDigital went!

Virgin Media has reported a fourth-quarter net loss of ?241m compared with ?163.2m year-on-year.

Revenue for the last quarter of 2008 at the cable and broadband provider declined slightly to ?1.03bn from ?1.05bn year-on-year, while operating cash was flow was ?320m from ?321m previously.

However, the figures were in line with City expectations

It also made an operating loss of ?50m compared with ?18m over the same period in 2007.

Virgin Media said it had sold 185,500 additional products of either broadband, TV or telephony in the three months to end-December, but did not reveal a number for net new customers.

The average revenue generated per user (ARPU) was ?42.30 in line with forecasts, while average monthly churn improved slightly to 1.2% from 1.4% year-on-year.

well i predict a lot worse to come with the recession and sh1t.

same goes to sly tv , they must be struggling too, and also the footie season will be ending in a couple of months or so, so even worse news.

Hopefully they can start offering better deals to new and existing customers, already they are offering free broadband upgrades to 10 mb. and have promissed more HD channels to follow soon.

while Sly have some good new customer deals, free dish and setup for 12 month on basic tv package, also a Sly+ box for ?25 . so VM have to re think their tactics, i think broadband is keeping them going though with the new fibre optics broadband.

The 4 promised HD channels for early March don't look like coming. Virgin prefer to make all of their big announcements before they publish results (ITV Player launch, 2Mb upgrade to 10Mb) there was nothing about HD beforehand and the actual presentation only said that they were waiting for an Ofcom review of pay TV. There's nothing testing either.

"The key HD content that we do today are premium sports and movie channels that Sky will not [inaudible]. As you know, OFCOM is conducting a market investigation into pay TV and that's our last consultation paper proposed a wholesale regime that would oblige Sky to wholesale its premium content including HD to us at economic rates. We are proactively engaged with OFCOM and we hope to hear the next steps in May or June." - Neil Berkett

There were a few companies who were interested a few years ago when Virgin Media were considering offers. Liberty Group, Viacom, Warner and some equity firms.
