    Medical Results in 3 years

Not sure whether it's me or the BBC this evening......

Patients in England will be able to book GP appointments and get test results online within three years, ministers are promising.

The moves are part of an Information Strategy designed to "take the hassle out of the health service".

Online communications between patients and their doctors is already happening in some places.

But the strategy sets out plans to ensure there is universal adoption of digital technologies.

The Department of Health is also encouraging the NHS and private companies to develop new health apps for smart phones and tablet computers.

and we all know how secure smartphones are don't we.....

I'd like the test results slightly faster than the promised 3 years, however I'm sure they may come in early probably by a day the way the NHS is going of late. I suppose the government is setting that target so that any private company can hit the target, makes it easier to sell off....

BBC News - Patients promised online GP booking by 2015

This is all premised on the thought that everyone has access to the internet or even wishes to have access, even better that everyone will have no problem with their results etc being available online. It could just be me but this during the same day that one NHS Trust in London was fined by the ICO for ?90,000.

An NHS trust has been fined ?90,000 after 59 patients' details were sent to the wrong person.

"Personal data, including diagnoses, was faxed to a member of the public 45 times for three months from last March."

BBC News - London NHS trust fined ?90,000 for data breach

Still you can trust them to get it right eventually, and keep your data secure, can't you? A friend at one Trust tells me that the Trust regularly sends emails out to all it's staff for missing casenotes for "Mr or Mrs x XXXXXX" and names them...... very secure and private I'm sure. Hope I never have to visit that Trust for anything private and confidential. maybe I'm too cynical lately, but it does seem like someone has some software to sell at a grossly inflated price and the DOH has some money to give away.

    Edit:

I hasten to add that I know they don't mean people will have to wait 3 years for results, but the BBC really do seem to be having problems today

Until last year I'd not seen a doctor since 1982, never bothered me tbh. Then when I was there he did say I looked very well for someone of 25... then proceeded to tell me it wasn't his fault that his receptionist had given him my sons records. That didn't really bother me except, had my son been to see my doctor about something private, or had I, it could have been revealed during the initial conversation..... point is if my doctor can make that mistake, how long before a computersied record is given to a person of the same name? Therein lies the problem, insufficient safeguards.

The government as a whole, not just this one, have an abysmal record of computerised systems and 'losing' information. Once the information has been released it's too late. That and once someone has the data, how long before it's considered efficient and profitable to share the information with third parties like insurance companies and the like?

How close to the truth are you! There are cures out there but they just push the corporate agenda, queenie does not take pills.

More proof of how safe your medical history is safe....... not

A hospital trust has been fined ?325,000 after computer hard drives containing confidential information on thousands of patients were stolen.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said the fine, for Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, was the highest it had ever imposed.

BBC News - Brighton hospital fined record ?325,000 over data theft

The data should have been encrypted at the very least.

You got that right mate, this was a conversation i had with a cheeky receptionist a while back...

CR- did you order two asthma inhalers
ME- yeh its my repeat prescription.
CR- you need to make an appointment to see the doctor!
                ME- why
CR- you haven't had your asthma reviewed in over a year, you need to make an appointment this week.
ME- yeh but im busy at work, can you not issue my inhalers and il make an appointment next week sometime.
CR- no the doctor wont issue anymore until you come and see him.
ME-!!!!!!why its asthma inhalers not methadone, would you deny a diabetic insulin?
CR- I can make an appointment for Friday at 2pm.
ME-a just told you am busy at work,so are you saying that if i don't attend then your gonna stop my inhalers?
CR-you know that you are supposed to come to the asthma clinic once a year and you haven't attended.
ME-last time i went to your asthma clinic the doctor asked me, "why are you here, your asthma is fine",i told her a cheeky receptionist insisted that i attend so i took that as, don't attend unless you are ill and ive not had an asthma attack in over 20yrs so it seemed like a waste of time.
CR- if you don't attend in over a year our computer flags this up that you haven't attended.
                ME- unflag it then.
CR- its not that simple, your doctor insists that you attend.
ME-so in a time when cutbacks are rife and health care is being hammered, your telling me that you are gonna deny me my inhalers unless i attend a clinic that i don't need but maybe someone else does, does that make any sense to you?
                CR-will you attend the appointment?
ME- yes i will but tell the doctor to wear ear muffs as i am gonna have a few choice words with him, if i don't attend its due to the fact that my inhaler has ran out and i have died so could you please give me your name so that my family can sue you for gross stupidity?
CR- i don't find that funny sir.
ME- i don't think i will see the funny side either on the account of being dead.
CR- i can give you a partial prescription.
ME- you never said that before, you said i "had" to attend this week,i told you that i am very busy at work but you seem hell bent in getting me down this week.
CR- i will put you down for Friday at 2 o'clock then?
ME- yeh a suppose you had better because it would be the beginning of the end if i didn't attend this week ehh, it would be the ultimate downward spiral..
CR- ok sir, Friday 2 o'clock,ok.
ME- no its not ok but il be there, goodbye..
