Rip-off dentists face crackdown over fees for private treatment that costs FOUR times more and should be done free on the NHS anyway

Unscrupulous dentists face a crackdown amid evidence that patients are being duped into paying for private treatments which should be free on the NHS.

The Office of Fair Trading is today demanding an urgent and radical shake-up in the ?5.73billion UK market as Britons are being 'deliberately misled' into spending up to four times more for fillings and crowns.

As many as 500,000 people a year are being duped into paying for expensive private treatments that should be free under the NHS, the OFT said.

Research suggest fees in this country are among the highest in Europe, with a bill for a check-up running to as much as ?124.

Many people struggle to find an NHS dentist at all while others are letting their teeth go to ruin because they cannot afford the work.

I need a crown and have been told, because it's at the back of my mouth, it has to be a gold one. What woman of a certain age wants a gold crown in her mouth? Or I can pay ?500 for a white one. Is this the NHS or the dentist??

Out of interest, what part do you think is shite, or do you think it is all shite.

I for one find the post informative, as I think dentists are a massive rip off, and delay the appointment for NHS patients in order to force you down the private road. Had personal experience of this, and now the dentist wants to charge me ?75 per filling private, rather than the ?40 NHS.

Not only do dentists trouser the money they make by forcing patients (who are often in severe pain) to go private, but if the work they do is shoddy there is little the patient can do.

If the work is NHS then the work carried out can be inspected and the dentists pulled up if the work is not up to standard. Often can be heard the pleas of dentists that they are held back by NHS red-tape, where in fact what they mean is they don't want their work checked and inspected. If you go private, ask your dentist what checks are in place to ensure a good standard of treatment. My guess would be - not much!

There is a retired dentist who posts on here. Wait till he comes along and see what he says about the article.
