The Queen to meet ex IRA leader

Sinn Fein has agreed to a historic first meeting with the Queen following a special meeting of the party.

The Queen will meet Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness at a charity reception in Belfast next week.

The former IRA leader has been a major figure in the Irish peace process and has been deputy first minister of Northern Ireland for five years.

    Story here

Without such landmark and historic meetings we may not have been in a peace process in Ireland a process whereby no one dies! The Queen, Prime Minister, MPs etc all have had a roll to play in the evolving peace in Ireland, if this meeting adds further cement to the process then I am all in favour of it.

Hitler as well, he stopped after having 6 million killed and shot himself, the queen could have given him a medal....

Skegs, while I can see why you and everyone welcomes the peace it seems to have been conveniently forgotten that he commanded a group of criminals, that murdered and maimed people, and was funded by money from the US. It should never have happened or been supported in the beginning. If I asked someone to shoot you and then said "ah I'll stop now" does that make it ok with your family that I had you killed? Would I deserve to meet the queen?

Hang on, is the same Queen of England that has reigned over the troubles and atrocities carried out in Northern Ireland by her soldiers? Is it the same queen who has reigned over her forces involvment in the Iraq and Afgan wars were trhe best part of 750,000 civilians have been killed?

Now this is going off thread, but with ref' to hitler etc - you started it my friend.

On thread. There are many on both sides of the divide in Ireland who will not agree with this - just like the queens visit to the republic. But this has been going on for far too long and it's time to have the strength to move on, for peace sake.
