    RBS Bank

What the ~~~~ is going on here with this outfit, there is no way a computer software glitch has caused the issues they are having, my ~~~~in money is sitting in cyber space and these knobs are claiming its a computer fault, bollox ! As soon as it is cleared up I will be shifting my cash (if its still there) to a new bank, under my ~~~~in bed !

BBC News - RBS boss blames software upgrade for account problems

surly a 'softwear upgrade' would be tried and tested BEFORE being released.

There going to HAVE to get it right, otherwise thers going to be THOUSANDS of fat unemployed people on the dole, saying there money have gone out their account, they need to buy beer and new slippers.

Besides, when the DK server crasher in approx September 2009 - yess all the attatchments were lost, but the rest of the forum was still intact, if Devilfish can sort it with minimual distrucprtion, so can the banks.

Most of the banking systems are based on systems written in the 1970's and patched and enhanced since then. The miracle is this kind of problem doesn't happen more often (most banks suffer, on average, 3-5 'major' incidents per year) !

Yes, but a lot of the code is a mish-mash between very old code running on software simulators (the simulators simulate the original hardware the code was designed for - PDP'11's etc) and newer code running natively on what are effectively fast PC's. The interactions between such structures can be extremely unpredictable and can easily slip through the testing phase as the test systems cannot fully mimic real-world usage.

Unfortunately, for banks, the update process is very often 'suck it and see' !

OK, so perhaps it would have been too simple, to start with a point, say the year 2000, any new costomer is transfered to a new system, the old system, as costomers do enquirys they change you to the new system?

Bit like that crap face ache site - upgrade to that pants timeline thing.

Rumours around the world the banks were infested by worms...

However, the worms of today are generally designed to do much more than just spread.

Many will now install back doors, so that the infected computer can be accessed by the attacker, or indeed anyone he/she may have sold access to banking.

              Banks are fighting deferent wars!!!

I know a lot of people in belfast took full advantage of the problem with ( ulster bank ) by withdrawing all their money out and taking their card out and putting it back in and withdrawing all their money out again and again and again , i know a guy who took 7 grand and he only had ?500 in his account - at least some customers were smiling at the banks ~~~~ up.

The problem is there is no new system as such. There's just a continuous series of inter-dependant processes, some of which date from the 1970's and some of which are relatively new. Its a very flimsy pack of cards, as the last few days have demonstrated.

Contrary to popular opinion, highstreet banks are not high tech outfits. They are mostly extremely conservative and rarely change the way they work. New technology (like cash machines) were simply shoe-horned into their existing systems.

They'll not be smiling when the psni knock their door and cart them off to Magilligan.

RBS Have we not been here before they couldn't run a raffle. The only way to sort it is to leave them. I think it's called people power something that we all forget nowadays because we think we are so individual. When will people learn that if you don't stick together you will get shafted forever.
