    NIMBYs with a difference

East London residents opposed to plans to site surface-to-air missiles on roofs for added security during the Olympics, are to march through Bow.

Six sites have been picked for surface-to-air missiles, some in residential spots, including Bow and Leytonstone.

BBC News - London 2012: East London residents march over missiles

Bet they'd be first to scream if something did get them and there were no defence in place. The Olympics are a high profile event, and would make a very easy target, although I hope no-one does try anything.

SAM's are a bit overkill for a few runners and highjumpers, this stinks of a false flag , just like the 11th september 2001

sorry but i have to laugh at this plan, just say highjackers send in a plane to crash into london,

are we going to shoot it down over a populated area, and do the same job the highjackers planned to do in first place.

just to stop them claiming Martyrdom,

if this is what uk government come up with for defence,i am definitely voting independence for scotland.

Not to worry, I and probably plenty of others, if we were given the choice would also vote for Scotand to be independent as well, as long as it also meant financial independence.

There seems to be no clear reason to have these missiles anyway as they would really only have significant impact on small aircraft. They would have absolutely no impact on ground-ground missiles or artillery devices nor are they guaranteed to have significant impact on something the size of a 747 (asuming they could get permission to engage such a target, which is dubious). I suspect they are there more as a deterent than for any practical use !

have to agree with you there. However can you imagine the uproar if nothing was done, no presence etc and something happened? I suppose it's in answer to the hijacking of aircraft for use as they did in on 11/9 more than anything else. A lot of people here wouldn't remember the 1972 Olympics, but it's not above terrorists to use such events for their own ends.

Imagine if it was a cover to use specialist radar and listening devices. Maybe let a few people that don't have a clue how the intelligent services work make their own cover story up for you. Of course that would never happen as everyone could see through it.

                  Second that, but

                  1) If something is on the way that's nasty - then they have time to nuke it over the sea - what if it's from inland?

                  2) POSSABLE the missale, nuke whatever making it disintergrate leaving 'small' debries - which can have fatal conquencseses.

BUT would guess there will be a no fly zone in force -

can't see them having a no fly zone over London with so many airports close by, particularly London City airport
