Ministers Back Speed Limit Clampdown

Councils will be given greater freedom to introduce 20mph schemes under new government proposals to improve road safety.

Local officials will also have more scope to cut speeds on rural roads with a history of accidents and introduce variable speed limits outside schools as part of the updated Department for Transport guidance.

Ministers hope the revised advice will give traffic authorities more flexibility when setting local speed limits and lead to more appropriate and consistent limits across England.

The guidance comes after the first annual rise in road deaths and serious injuries for 17 years, which saw 1,901 people killed last year.

Totally agree we should all slow down but if road safety really is a top priority, why isn't the repairing of potholes at the top of the agenda?

WHOA, HANG ON.

Here in Meat-City there a road called "Meat-Square-Road" this used to have a 40 MPH limit, AND a roundabout at the end of it, the traffic would flow freely, no problem.

then some ***** decided to put traffic lights at the end and drop limit to 30 MPH.

Now what it means is yes at peak times you STILL have to WWWAAAIIITTT for a gap in the traffic, but it takes longer!

There would be better, JUST these 20MPH limits at the entrance to all citys in PEAK hours ONLY.

So as you approch 200 meters before city boundary 20mph - no staop start traffic at lights!
