Shift work link to 'increased risk of heart problems'

Shift work link to 'increased risk of heart problems'
Shift workers are slightly more at risk of having a heart attack or stroke than day workers, research suggests.

An analysis of studies involving more than 2m workers in the British Medical Journal said shift work can disrupt the body clock and have an adverse effect on lifestyle.
It has previously been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Limiting night shifts would help workers cope, experts said.

The team of researchers from Canada and Norway analysed 34 studies.

In total, there were 17,359 coronary events of some kind, including cardiac arrests, 6,598 heart attacks and 1,854 strokes caused by lack of blood to the brain.

These events were more common in shift workers than in other people.

The BMJ study calculated that shift work was linked to a 23% increased risk of heart attack, 24% increased risk of coronary event and 5% increased risk of stroke.

But they also said shift work was not linked to increased mortality rates from heart problems and that the relative risks associated with heart problems were "modest".
The researchers took the socioeconomics status of the workers, their diet and general health into account in their findings.
    No rest

Dan Hackam, associate professor at Western University, London Ontario in Canada, said shift workers were more prone to sleeping and eating badly.

"Night shift workers are up all the time and they don't have a defined rest period. They are in a state of perpetual nervous system activation which is bad for things like obesity and cholesterol," he said.

The authors say that screening programmes could help identify and treat risk factors for shift workers, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

They add that shift workers could also be educated about what symptoms to look our for, which might indicate early heart problems.

Jane White, research and information services manager at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, said there are complex issues surrounding shift work.

"It can result in disturbed appetite and digestion, reliance on sedatives and, or stimulants, as well as social and domestic problems.

"These can affect performance, increase the likelihood of errors and accidents at work, and even have a negative effect on health.

She said the effects of shift work needed to be well-managed.

"Avoiding permanent night shifts, limiting shifts to a maximum of 12 hours and ensuring workers have a minimum of two full nights sleep between day and night shifts are simple, practical solutions that can help people to cope with shift work."

Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said the increased risk to an individual shift worker "was relatively small".

"But many Brits don't work nine to five and so these findings becomes much more significant.

"Whether you work nights, evenings or regular office hours, eating healthily, getting active and quitting smoking can make a big difference to your heart health."

Its amazing how night shift can screw people up, some of my workmates really struggled with it and requested back on day shift.
They had all sorts of problems with sleep pattern and some got terrible indigestion, a had to put guys back on day shift who i would rather have had working nights but when it affects their health then there is no choice.

Personally a have always loved night shift, there is no traffic going to work and most the senior management dont do nights so you don't get pestered by some idiot with a clipboard banging on about figures.
Its funny how the work just gets done with no fuss or stress when you let people get on with it.

Since doing nights a have never had to give out a warning in 2 years or have any serious words with anyone.
The lads know the drill, if the work gets done then they can pretty much do what they want for the last few hours, ave never seen so many home repairs done in ma life.
The wages are higher and the week is shorter and we have never had any problems with staff shortages on night shift.

A don't doubt the survey above as ive seen how some people cant cope on nights, being a socially awkward vampire i find nights pretty stress free..

If there's anyone out there in a position to try this, I'd like to know the results.....

Many years ago I found myself without job for some time.

I got into a routine where if I was tired, I'd go to bed. When I woke up, I'd get out of bed... Sounds normal so far.
But the trick is that it didn't matter what time of day it is...you follow the routine.

I was going to bed at 1pm & getting up at 10pm. Then sleeping again at 8am, up at 5pm. Whatever my body wanted, it got.

I've never felt better in my life. I always had loads of energy & was never grumpy. I'd do it again if I could, but I can't. So I'm now a grumpy old man who's always tired & has no energy.

                  Intresting.

OK, so when you was a kid, what did did you log off and go to bed, and log on.

Then as you grew, what time did you log-off and log-on, as you got older
                  say 11 or so.

then when you was doing this, how old was you then - ish

how many hours are you off-line for now, your 'older'

I use to work shifts, 7-2, 2-10 and 10-7. 2 days on each shift then 2 days off. every 42 days I had 16 days off and xmas/new year shutdown. Used to love the shifts and time off but after 10 years I left because all the good terms and conditions we had were being taken away. Went on days in new job and never thought I would say this, but I would never go back to shifts as I now sleep so much better through the nights and feel a great deal better in myself . I guess its what suits one, dont suit the other but for for me its the Day Guy.

I felt fine doing just night shifts but doing a mixture of day & night shifts without regular sleep patterns really did screw up my body clock, even having the same amount of sleep I still felt tired & worn out most of the time.

As a kid I was active from about 8am. Even through to my teens I was active early.

From about 14 onwards I could sleep later into the day & be a bit more active into the night. Usually getting about 12 hours sleep per day (except school nights).

Worked the clubs in my late teens. Went 3 months without seeing sunlight one winter. Felt like a vampire one morning when I didn't get home till 8am....big firey ball in the sky tried to blind me.

The time I let my body clock rule my life, I would of been about 24 ish.

Currently I have problems staying asleep. Keep waking up through the night. I have no problems turning over & going back to sleep. But it's still not good.

Been told in the past that I have sleep apnea. Might have to shed a few pounds

Well tip of the day is, try NOT to have your cell phone next to your head

                            1) disturps sleep patterns

                            2) If you grab it in the night and start looking at DK, that's it, up all night.

A don't know if there is a direct link to it causing heart failure but shift work does affect certain peoples health.
Like a said in my previous post, some workers hated it as it screwed up their sleep pattern and appetite whilst others (like myself) loved night shift.
They do say theirs a direct link to heart failure for people who suffer lack of sleep, this has never bothered me as a can sleep anywhere but a have a lot of mates who suffer from sleep problems.

A have saw articles that say your more likely to suffer heart problems between the age of 40/50 if your overweight etc.
I am a bit overweight and a smoke which doesn't help as im taking blood pressure tablets as it is.
A could never see myself as a jogger who eats tofu but some minor changes are a must..
