    Geoffrey Hughes dies, aged 68

Coronation Street' star Geoffrey Hughes dies, aged 68
Geoffrey Hughes has died aged 68, it has been confirmed.

The actor, who was well known for his roles in a number of British dramas, lost his battle with prostate cancer last night (July 27).

Hughes played Eddie Yeats in Coronation Street and went on to star as Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances, Twiggy in The Royle Family and Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat.

Friend and colleague Ricky Tomlinson told ITV Granada: "Geoff wasn't just an actor. He was my mate. I used to call him every few weeks but hadn't spoken to him in about a fortnight. It's such a loss."

A Corrie spokesperson added: "We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes. He created a legendary and iconic character in Eddie Yates who will always be part of Coronation Street.

"Everyone connected with the programme sends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends."

The Wallasey-born actor had intensive radiotherapy in August 2010 after collapsing at his home on the Isle of Wight.

Hughes was appointed Deputy Lord Lieutenant for the island in 2009, providing the official link between the island and royalty at formal events.

I've got vague memories of him in Corrie, was he a binman?

Did he live with Hilda Ogden?

                  THE TRUTH
                  The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

He rented the cottage next door to me in the village that scenes from Heartbeat were filmed. "Oh God" I thought "not another posing actor",

                              How wrong I was.

What a very genuine, down to earth guy. Always had time to chat over the fence. A very good neighbour and all round good egg.

                              RIP
