Drivers hit by 10% rise in garage charges to ?83 an hour

CAR repair bills are in the fast lane ? after labour charges soared ten per cent in two years to a record ?83 a hour.

The average price for garage labour rose three per cent in the past year following a seven per cent hike in 2010-11, a survey found.

The most expensive charges were found in meatheadshire, where drivers were stung for labour rates of up to ?201.60 AN HOUR ? with parts on top. Surrey was costliest on average, with an hour setting back drivers ?98.27.

Motorists in Powys, Wales, paid the least ? with an average of ?58.46.



Price hikes were highest at smaller, independent workshops, up from an average of ?60.68 in 2011 to ?64.58 in 2012 ? a 6.44 per cent rise, the annual Warranty Direct Labour Rates Survey found.

Costs at big dealers rose to ?95.94 an hour, 48.6 per cent more on average than independents.

Cornwall was the region with the biggest price rises, with rates spiralling almost 13 per cent.

But drivers in East Yorkshire saw costs fall by 14 per cent.

Warranty Direct said: ?We are now at the point that a simple breakdown could cost an eye-watering sum to put right.?

This is why I butter up my local MOT garage. Not only do I get cheaper MOT's, but if I need to throw the car over the pit I get free access.

It's saved me many a day of crawling around under my car.

For all those able bodied people with a modicum of intellect, buy a haynes manual & do it yourself.
Or get the kids interested in it so in time they will do your repairs for you.

i have never owned a car over three years old
and everytime i change my car,i get free labour/parts
and servicing plus AA cover for three years as part of the
deal when i get a new car.and after you get the first car
it's then becomes buying a new car for just a bit more
than a secondhand model so iv'e never had a garage bill

you have to play there game mate and i can
assure you cash does get you a better deal
everytime. i have a few times sold my cars
privately once i get a part ex price from the
dealer and i dont ask more from friends
