MPs could see their pay soar by 40 per cent to almost ?92,000 under proposals floated by the parliamentary watchdog.

The idea, coming after the Westminster expenses scandal and in the midst of pay freezes across much of the country, immediately ran into a hail of criticism.

Among many proposals for a shake-up of MPs? pay and pensions, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority suggested MPs could earn four times the national average wage.

That would see their pay increase from the ?65,738 to ?91,936.

It also suggests MPs should give up their gold-plated final salary pensions, receive less after leaving Parliament and also contribute far more to their retirement pots.

at a time of austerity why not give some of the country's most wealthy people something extra.

MP's should be sponsered by their constituants who could then reward those MP's who represent them properly.

Gone are the days when people got into politics for the right reasons like trying to make a difference..
Today its people looking for a stepping stone to bigger things, Tony Blair and John Major are good examples, both Tories and both earning mega bucks from corporations.
Politics stink of corruption now, they may not break the law but they shatter every moral law you can name and wonder why people have a low opinion of them.
A wouldn't say i have a low opinion of them, i hate them and its not often i hate people....

I think everyone from councillors to mp's to msp's to lords should have to declare their incomes publicly and I think it would be interesting to see how many receive gifts incomes etc from all the big companies and small who benefit year after year from big contracts awarded. Avarice in the public sector has reached record levels and has to stop.
