A total of 27 MPs including some former ministers are claiming taxpayer money for rent while simultaneously letting out properties in London, the Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
Some are claiming up to ?20,000 a year despite receiving income from properties which were often bought with assistance from the taxpayer, according to the report
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority told the paper that eight MPs were either letting properties to, or renting from, another MP, effectively allowing them to build up property investments from tax revenue.
Using official parliamentary records, the Telegraph found that former defence secretary Liam Fox and shadow immigration minister Chris Bryant were among those claiming rent while letting out London properties.
The MPs have done nothing wrong under parliamentary rules but the report is likely to lead to further questions about how tax money is used.
House of Commons speaker John Bercow wrote to the expenses regulator in a bid halt publication of the rental details, citing "security" reasons, the Telegraph reported on Thursday.
