Anyone else want a go at Internet freedom?

Not content with quietly ignoring countries that ignore it's own resolutions, whilst supporting countries invading other countries the UN has now decided that it wants to get in on the Internet surveillance bandwagon.

UN calls to expand internet surveillance

The internet has become a standard tool for terror groups who use it to spread propaganda, recruit members and raise cash, warns a UN report.

Wider surveillance of the net would help combat this growing problem, said the report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In addition, it said, more could be done to track mobile phones to help catch members of terror groups.

It would be helpful if more ISPs retained data, it said.

"Just as internet use among regular, lawful citizens has increased in the past few years, terrorist organisations also make extensive use of this indispensable global network for many different purposes," said Yury Fedotov, executive director of UNODC in a statement.

As well as maintaining communications between members of terror groups, the net was also proving useful as it let them incite followers to act on their behalf.

Just what's needed - an Organisation that can't get it's own members to enforce it's own resolutions giving more incentive to governments to actively spy on it's own citizens, in the name of anti-terrorism. Bunch of fuds. The UN should have better things to do like publish inaccurate global warming statistics.

Before we get the "nothing to fear, nothing to hide" brigade jumping in, ask this "Why should the majority of the population have their activities logged because of the minority?"

A agree, a hate that argument "nothing to fear, nothing to hide", it completely misses the point.
Governments have used every tactic possible to gain control of people on the net and in many ways have succeeded..
What annoys me is that its mostly on the behalf of big corporations who have a zero tolerance of the net and they wont compromise one inch on their bottom line.
Terrorism and under age sex is usually their opening argument which usually leads to piracy and censorship, soon the net will be like the telly, one big pile of advert ridden censored crap...

@Shady, I don't have to drug mine, she takes them willingly herself.

I've seen her get out of bed to go to the toilet, have a conversation & go back to bed...but have no recollection of ever getting out of bed.
She's even told me that when shes out of it on drink or drugs, I can do anything I want to her.

You know, thinking about it, I'm not so sure that's a good thing. Am I really that bad she has to be unconscious before I start???
Or does she just object to the use of a chicken??

            Bring this back on track.

The UN can't work together on where to order lunch from, let alone police anything. What ever makes them think monitoring the internet is going to stop terrorists?
What they need to do is bitch slap the middle east delegates into actually doing something useful.

Yeah "Internet Freedom" I tried this recently and found myself answering my cell phone to a Moderator of DK, asking me where i am. As i hadn't posted in a few days.

That would be fine, but i haven't told that person of the moderation team my cell phone number!
