Cuts to child benefit for one million families

The Coalition?s child benefit cuts may be illegal under EU law, experts said last night.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the decision to cut child benefit was 'excruciatingly difficult'

? Families with anyone earning more than ?50,000 will have child benefit cut
? HMRC sending 1million letters to those affected this week
? Taxman can claw back money from British workers more easily than from other EU citizens
? Ministers also warned new rules will encourage unmarried couples to lie about their relationships

The move could discriminate against British workers because their earnings and benefits are far easier to monitor and claw back than those of other EU citizens working here.

Under the shake-up most families will continue to receive the payments ? only to lose part or all of them through the tax system if they are higher earners.

David Heaton, chairman of the tax faculty at the institute, said: ?You could find yourself in a British office, sitting next to a colleague from elsewhere in Europe who is paid the same as you, has the same number of children as you and is receiving benefits for them, but who is not facing the same tax charge from HMRC as you. That is discriminatory.?

Simple, we need the money, we are broke?? [IMG]http://

I'm a strong supporter of "universal Benefits".

but its hard to swallow some woman on the news (family income ?100,000+) grouching how hard things will be if this is implemented.

for **** sake, we have people (working people) who cant afford to feed and warm their kids.

waste of time anyway as, most of the, affected will just fiddle more on their tax returns to make up (and a bit more)

    Firemouth rules for life.
If it aint broke, don't fix it!
If its broke, fix it and use it again!
If it proper broke, use it for something else!

          OK ON and OFF topic:-

Can't say to much incase the costomer is reading.

In our parking lot is a 'commercial' vechile that has a DISABLED tax disc.

Perhaps the govment can look into this scam as well.

Disabled my arse, my back is killing after working on it.

My brother inlaw earns just over ?50k they have a large 4 bed house and huge mortgage and larger council tax to pay. After all the bills they are not much left with so its really a myth that you are loaded when you earn more unless its serious money six figure salary say. The only time he would see the benfit from earning ?50k is if he downsized.

hmmmmm have to agree here, about 1k a week, less tax, insurance, and thats before ya pay mortgage, council tax etc etc etc, only time ya will be well off on this type of money is if your single, or if the mrs is earning reasonable money as well.

I'm a firm believer in having a standard of living equivilent to the amount of graft you put into your life. If you've worked hard at school, university etc and landed a well paid job you deserve to have a better life than those who just did the bare minimum.

I worked out that after 24yrs in the Forces, qualified to the equivelent of Masters Degree and worked every day since I was 12yrs old, I'd be just as well off if I was a smack head getting all the benefits including housing. The only time I'll profit is if I reach retuiring age when I'll have 2 pensions to fall back on. No doubt by then the Government will find some way of taxing me so I'm on the same level as an oxygen thief.
