    Polling today for police commissioner

POLLING stations were open today for the election of Leicestershire and Rutland?s first police and crime commissioner.

The role will replace that of the police authority and the holder will be responsible for setting budgets and police priorities and holding the force and chief constable to account.

The three candidates for the ?70,000-a-year post are former Air Chief Marshall Sir Clive Loader (Con), Leicester community worker and businessman Suleman Nagdi (Ind) and Leicester Assistant Mayor Sarah Russell (Lab).

The election will be run under the supplementary vote system where the voter is asked to indicate a first preference and, if they wish, a second choice.

Initially, only the first preference votes are counted.

If a candidate has received more than 50 per cent of those votes he or she will be declared the winner. If no candidate has more than 50 per cent, the number of second preference votes for the first and second most popular candidates are counted and the one with the most is declared the winner.

Polling stations will be open between 7am and 10pm and the winner is expected to be announced late tomorrow.

do the reverse of what we have said.
      Party 2

If you don't vote for us, we will be telling you "told you so" for the next
      four years.

As if anyone gives a flying f**k.

It's a complete waste of time and public money.

The %turnout figures should be interesting.
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

where i live there is voting for police commisioners and i for one will not be voting, the old police authorities where volountry positions with only expenses paid and made up of various people in the local area, the new commisioners are on a salary depending on the area of between 65,000 to 100,000 pa so how does this put more police on the streets and cut paper work as somebody has to pay for them namely us mugs through taxes. could not this money be better of in the nhs or in putting more police on the steets instead of lining somebody pockets.
as to meat heads question about no votes in london the mayors office looks after policing in that area.

Another money wasting idea, jobs for the boys. They will be setting budgets from budgets set by the government - at the end of the day they won't be able to spend more than they are allocated anyway. may as well have left the police authorities in place. Instead we'll now have some highly paid puppet to do the same job.

What added value is a police commissioner going to bring?
My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

Ok, i voted. even though i agree its a "lesson in futility".

what i cant get my head around is why this idea, touted as an idea from US, that is tried and tested.
is nothing like its US model.
NO large conurbations, in the US, elects their "Police Chief". (its a job handed out by the Mayor, with no democratic input)

its a system used exclusively by "Small town America".
and is, as corrupt, as any US political system always is.

I'll wager turnout will be dismal.
but i cant help feeling this is just what this government wanted.
though how low can a turnout be, before stating the winner has a "mandate", becomes a misnomer?
