MPs To Debate Case Of SAS Man Jailed Over Gun

There will be debate in the Commons later about the SAS sergeant jailed for possessing a gun.

Sergeant Danny Nightingale, a father-of-two who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was sentenced to 18 months in military detention by a court martial after he admitted having the 9mm pistol.

The gun, which was a gift from Iraqi soldiers he had been training, had been packed up and returned to him by colleagues in Iraq, after he had to leave the country in a hurry to help organise the funeral of two friends killed in action.

Sgt Nightingale, who also pleaded guilty to illegally possessing ammunition, suffers medical problems which affect his memory and said he did not remember having the weapon.

His wife Sally, who saw her husband for the first time in two weeks at the weekend, told Sky News: "We think Danny is the victim of a failure in the system and that he's been made an example of.
Sally Nightingale, wife of Sergeant Danny Nightingale Sgt Nightingale's wife Sally hopes to get her husband's sentence overturned

"I don't know how easy it's going to be to overturn this (the sentence). I'm not a lawyer myself and my understanding of the legal system is minimal.

"But I'm hoping that with the pressure and the support from the public and with the MPs on our side, we can get this overturned as quickly as possible and get Danny back home to his family."

Asked how her husband was coping at the Military Corrective Training Centre in Colchester, Essex, Mrs Nightingale said: "Danny's an outdoor person; he never sits still and it's very hard for him to be in there. But with all the support behind him, that will see him through."

Earlier, she said: "He has received letters from members of the public and... he is genuinely humbled."

The case is be debated by MPs after Mrs Nightingale wrote to David Cameron urging him to intervene.

Four special forces veterans, including the former commanding officer of the SAS, have also written an open letter to the Prime Minister, claiming Sgt Nightingale was "the victim of a monstrous miscarriage of justice".

His solicitor Simon McKay said he would be lodging an appeal against the detention on the grounds his client only pleaded guilty after being told he might otherwise be jailed for five years.

"That guilty plea is not a true reflection of how he feels about this case," Mr McKay told Sky News.

"He has always maintained that he wasn't legally guilty of possession of this firearm," he added.

Where do you get your information from?

Guns, yes..but only to a point. Ever wondered how we send an olympic team to the shooting events if all guns are illegal? What do they practice with...peashooters?

Arrows are completely legal. Both for bows & crossbows. Neither are licensed & can be purchased by anyone aged 18 or over.

Knives are also legal. Kind of hard to cut veg & carve joints of meat with a fork and spoon.

Here's one to tax your 'brain'(?) to the max.

This man is a highly trained killer, a member of the best special forces unit in the world. He has handled & used just about every type of weapon out there.

Does that make him more or less dangerous when in ownership of a firearm?

Don't forget, as well as being a highly trained killer. He is also trained in discipline & rules of engagement.

So who's the biggest risk, him or an inner city gang member?

In a criminal civil court he would get minimum 5 years gaol time. A royal pardon would not go amiss in this case.

Oddly enough the Olympic team used to have to practice outside the UK because they couldn't have the guns here, I think they used to practice in Switzerland. However please read below about the 2012 Olympics.

"For London to simply host the three .22 caliber pistol shooting events (Men?s 50m, Men?s 50m Rapid Fire and Women?s 25m) required an act of Parliament. Those training for the Olympics after the 1997 handgun ban had to practice for the 2000, 2004, and 2008 games at ranges overseas.
Britain relented, to a small degree, for the 2012 games. In 2009, the Home Office allowed for the creation of a limited ?Elite Cartridge Pistol Squad? that would be allowed to practice in England and Wales prior to the games. The ?Squad? was selected ?by a committee comprising the British Shooting Head Pistol Coach and the Pistol Coaches of England, Wales and Scotland.? Even with this compromise, a pistol shooting hopeful would have to spend years training outside the UK in order to acquire the skills and recognition required to be considered by the committee for domestic practice."

                  So there you go.

If you have a justified reason to be carrying the knife, nothing will happen.

Be that a requirement of your job, i.e. a carpet fitter. Or, that you have just purchased it.

But if you're running around the streets trying to kill people, you deserve everything you get.

I'm too lazy to check this, but I'm sure you can still own & shoot muskets, flintlocks, etc. Anything that requires powder, wadding, ball.. can still be legally owned & used with a license.

quite rightly so but i *THINK* it is still PERFECTLY legal to shoot a Welsch man using a Bow and Aroow.
