Palestinians win UN vote for ?state?

The Palestinians won an overwhelming diplomatic victory at the UN on Thursday after 138 out of 193 member states voted to upgrade their status at the global body, sending one of the strongest signals yet in favour of an independent Palestinian state.

Speaking before the vote at the UN General Assembly, Mahmoud Abbas, the veteran Palestinian leader, described the resolution as the ?birth certificate? of the Palestinian state. He said Palestine was in ?desperate need of peace? and insisted that the UN move was intended ?to launch a final serious attempt to achieve peace? with Israel.

The resolution will raise the status of the Palestinian delegation from a non-member observer ?entity? to that of a non-member observer ?state?.

It falls short of full UN membership and most analysts say it is unlikely to affect the balance of power between Israel and the Palestinians in the near future.

Palestinian officials argue, however, that the upgrade will allow them to join other UN agencies as well as the International Criminal Court ? a prospect that has alarmed Israel and that may give the Palestinians greater political leverage.

They hope that Thursday?s vote will bolster their position in negotiations with Israel and strengthen the increasingly fragile political position of Mr Abbas himself.

You would think that after the terrible holocaust suffered by the Jewish people Israel would be the last country to commit crimes against anyone, while showing absolutely no respect for the law or common decency against there neighbours!!!!

I hope this may help both Govt crimes to end.

They won a vote for nothing. Israel has never taken any notice of UN resolutions, and there's no indication that they ever will. The US will always veto any resolution against Israel anyway, and most of the time the UK will as well. So nothing gained. Israels response is to build more houses in the occupied territories:

Plans to build settlements in the area, known as E1, are strongly opposed by Palestinians, who say the development will cut the West Bank in two, preventing the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state.

I agree with that sentiment, I certainly don't agree with Israel building on land that isn't theirs and effectively imprisoning the entire Palestinian population behind walls.

One interesting thing (don't know how much difference it will make though!) is that as a non-member state, palestine now has the right to use the International Criminal Court (ICC) if Israel continues to pursue its oppressive agenda.

To Israel? It will make no difference, they've been ignoring UN resolutions for years, and taking them to court will make no difference. Problem is that it's the US (and probably UK's) only really ally in the middle east - I seem to recall that the US may have given them the ability to make nukes at one time. The US isn't going to refuse to assist them in case they go to say Russia for help. Until the US/UK refuse to back Israel they will continue as they are, and the UN or court will do nothing to help the Palestinians, who after all have a right to be there.

We bombed the f**k out of Yugoslavia over Kosovo for similar reasons with NATO backing, and without UN backing, yet haven't lifted a finger to help the Palestinians.
