Foreign footballers should be made to learn English like other migrant workers, MPs have told ministers.

Under pressure from football authorities, the Government has allowed footballers to remain outside rules requiring new workers to learn the language.
Clubs had argued that the rule could put an undue restriction on their ability to compete in the international transfer market.

The Commons Home Affairs Committee has now dismissed that and said that the special exemption granted to footballers cannot be justified.

Suggesting that ministers granted the exemption because of thefinancial clout of the big clubs, the Labour-led committee insisted thatplayers should be required to demonstrate "a basic level of competencein English".

"We are at a loss to understand why specific exemption from the English languagerequirement has been made for footballers and not for any other occupation whichrequires international mobility," the committee said.

I think these MPs should get off their arses and take a walk round certain areas of most major towns and in many small clothing factories and cleaning companies...............There are plenty of Non English speaking workers in this country and no doubt there will be some MPs with Non English speaking Au-Pairs/Maids/Cleaners/Nannies etc.
The MPs need to learn how to speak English instead of Fluent BullSh*t.

You can tell when an MP is lying - their lips move. However why should footballers, or even thier coaches, be exempt when everyone else has to do it? Nothing special about football.

This could back fire on the government.

They introduced tests for immigrants. These had to be passed in order to stay in the country.
But I know that if you bung ?300 into the hand of the course teacher...you will pass without question.

But footballers cannot get away with that as they are in the public eye.

The government are not withdrawing the tests, even though they are so corrupt every immigrant that goes through it knows ?300 will see them through.

Now, if a footballer is shown to of passed the citizen test but still can't speak more than three words of english... questions will be asked. Those questions will then uncover the corrupt money machine that is the citizen test.
The government will have to address the situation & find ways to blame everybody else.
