Extradition is different if you're American

The software tycoon John McAfee is being deported to the United States from Guatemala.

He is being escorted to the airport in Guatemala City where he will board a plane to Florida.

Mr McAfee was detained a week ago after fleeing from Belize, where he is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of a neighbour.

The 67-year-old has spent more than a month on the run with his girlfriend, blogging about his exploits.

A recent entry declared: "John to leave detention this morning."

A spokesman for Guatemala's immigration office, Fernando Lucero, said: "Complying with migration law, Mr John McAfee is to be deported to his country of origin".

Mr McAfee has expressed his wish to return to the US.

His lawyers blocked an extradition request from Belize, where he has been named a "person of interest" in the murder of Florida businessman Gregory Faull.

His "country of origin" was Belize, he ran from there, not the US. Funny how being American gets you different treatment for extradition and you can choose where you want to go.....

Sure have one of Joyce McKinney as she was then. Skipped bail in the UK, been arrested in the US, but oddly enough the UK didn't ask for her and her accomplice to be extradited.

On 19 September 1977 McKinney was arrested and charged, but vigorously denied the charges. While being taken to Epsom for a court appearance, she held a notice up at the window of the police vehicle saying, "Kirk left with me willingly!"[7] Press reports and McKinney's lawyer refer to the substantial size differential between McKinney, described as slightly built, and Anderson, described as substantially larger.[8][9]
Along with Keith May, her alleged co-conspirator, McKinney jumped bail and fled the country.[10] On 18 July 1979, they were both arrested in the United States by the FBI on charges of making false statements in order to obtain passports.[11] They both received suspended sentences.[12]
No extradition proceedings were instituted by Britain, and the English court sentenced McKinney in her absence to a year in jail.[13] Under the then-Sexual Offences Act 1956, due to the victim's gender, there was no crime of rape committed, though indecent assault of a man applied.[14]
