People Who Fail To Fight Flab Face Benefit Cuts

Obese people could face cuts to their benefits if they do not attend exercise sessions, under new plans being outlined by a local council.

Westminster City council has published a report looking at how councils can link benefit payments to claimants' lifestyles.

It describes how some local authorities have begun allowing GPs to prescribe leisure activities like swimming and fitness classes.

It is hoped that by using technology such as smart cards, the use of leisure facilities can be monitored leading to housing and council benefit payouts being cut for those not attempting to lose weight.

The document, written with the think-tank the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU), states: "Where an exercise package is prescribed to a resident, housing and council tax benefit payments could be varied to reward or incentivise residents."

Obesity costs the NHS ?5.1bn a year and the number of Britons who are overweight is expected to increase by 10% over the next decade.

In recent years the responsibility for tackling public health has moved back to local government, despite many councils experiencing funding cuts.

Councillor Philippa Roe, Leader of Westminster City Council, said: "Councils have a great opportunity to improve lives by thinking how public health can be integrated into existing local services, this can lead to savings being shared across the entire public sector.

"This report contains exactly the sort of bright, forward-thinking and radical ideas that need to be looked at."

I'm all for performing liposuction on the fatties. Use the blubber to make bio fuel to heat their houses. Win, win solution.

Since labour Iain Duncan Smith was elected work and pensions secretary he never concentrated how to lower the employments but has bean tightening belts on the unemployed people.

Only last week he said it is unfair for benefits to rise at a faster rate than wages, he is not in touch with the community??

It will be more than just the PC brigade.

The government needs to look at the price of food, & the difference between healthy food prices & junk food.

Sugar rich, high fat foods are a lot cheaper than the healthier options. Even the 'extra value' foods the supermarkets offer are misleading. The average chav don't read to good, so can't even see the high fat levels in these value foods.
A pack of fat rich, cheap bacon... 89p. A pack of lean cut bacon ?3.
If you're on a budget you go for the cheapest food you can get. Is it any wonder the country has an obesety problem?

just seems another move by councils to create some more work for themselves.... remember when the 'no smoking in public places' came into force... new jobs created for council inspectors with their clip boards to check on workshops for 'no smoking' signs... Hey, we're engulfed in carbon monoxide from car exhausts but no worries we've got a new 'no smoking' sign

it's a pity healthy campaigns are only focused on the unemployed... a better idea would be to bring in legislation to stop the manufacture of unhealthy foods, and thus take care of everybody's health.

... there was no fatties during the war or shortly after, when food was rationed, no need for exercise.

Some of the Councillors will also be dieting first to set an example and lose a lot of weight in some cases, or will they stick to their bigoted ways as usual? (do as we say, not do as we do...)

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

Seen Eric Pickles MP, there's one obese *****! Better idea to give him a 'welfare card' instead of an MP's expenses account... to cut down on his daily consumption beef burgers! (No MacD's allowed!)

think they should cut the extra money the alkies get to fund their habit and sort out all the thieving dirty scruffy likkle smack heads; may see a decrease in crime too.
