Tory leader David Cameron vows to crack down on 'benefits tourism' by European migran

European migrants could have their access to the welfare state limited, David Cameron said yesterday as he sought to appease eurosceptics in his own party and the increasing numbers of voters won over by Ukip's anti-EU rhetoric.

His attack on so-called "benefits tourism" came as the five-year-old quotas limiting the number of people from Bulgaria and Romania, which joined the EU in 2007, to work and live in Britain are set to expire.

That could lead to thousands of workers from those two countries setting off to wealthier parts of Europe in search of jobs.

Mr Cameron is due to make a major speech on Europe later this month and yesterday he gave his clearest indication yet that it will include some kind of commitment, in certain circumstances, to a referendum on Britain's future in the EU.

Rather than offer the simple choice of staying in or leaving the EU, which is what many right-wing Tory MPs advocate,

Mr Cameron is hoping he can negotiate a change in EU rules that will reduce the power of Brussels and increase that of the Westminster government, and then put the new conditions to a popular vote.

Part of his strategy is to convince the public that he can wrest concessions out of the EU. The Tory chairman, Grant Shapps, came close to saying yesterday that Mr Cameron is more anti-EU than Margaret Thatcher was. Asked by the BBC to compare the two, Mr Shapps praised Mr Cameron as "the only ever British Prime Minister to veto a European treaty". He added: "She never vetoed a treaty."

You are of course aware, I'm sure, that it is also possible for someone from the UK to claim benefits in other countries in Europe as well? We only see "one side" of the story, people claiming benefits here.

I don't see any politicians jumping up and telling the newspapers the stats on Britons claiming benefits in other EU countries. I doubt the Daily Mail will be running any stories on how many Britons are claiming benefits from EU countries while living there.

Perhaps it's because it doesn't make headline news that the Tories want and the sheep want to hear?

I think the problem is, people have had enough. they find any plausable excuse to slam and mock the EU..

Problem is, we didnt sign up to no EU, we didnt want our fish stolen and we certainly didnt want MASS immigration..

If they would of poll'd us if we wanted to join, they wouldn't of had this issue..

That'd be John Major or Maggie who signed up up for that name change. And look who used to work for him, that'd be Dodgy Dave. Oh and you're being selective about your answer Kal. This thread is about benefits, not whether it's called the EEC (signed up for by UK wide vote under Ted Heath) or EU.

This is strange... I've heard for years from politicians that the UK benefits from immigrants.. and that immigrants are hard working, and it is they and not lazy Brits that took the jobs that were created......

I think a better idea would be just to scrap UK benefits, or at least have benefits matching the poorest economies of Europe... that way a lot fairer.

                    What stop benefit!!!

You all talking crap there will be more beggars then thieves on the streets, the only solution is to tell the EU countries to have the same amount of benefit compare with UK and we will all be going abroad to a warm climate country and only employed people stay in UK??

A would prefer kicking the idiot bankers into jail rather than a minority of Europeans on the dole, most of them work and send the money home so being unemployed makes no sense to them.
Its funny how the papers always go gunning for Europeans, benefit cheats, the sick but never seem to highlight the big business players that crippled the world economy..
Still, as long as we are all arguing with each other the Government will continue to blame the worst off and protect their criminal friends..
Europe is vital to our economy and the billions in trade we do with them dwarfs any benefit amount taken out.
Am all for catching the cheats but that's the price we pay for cheap labour and cheap foreign goods,, enforcing it would cost more than is lost..

All politicians ever say is what they think their voters want to hear.

Like the statement "We have opened 1000 more academy schools"

and Joe Sheep thinks ah they're nice they have built more schools.

What he should have said is "We have closed 1,000 schools and opened them up again as Academy Schools"

Only problem with that is that Joe Non Sheep knows that his tax money will have been spent renaming and rebranding schools instead of actually doing something useful with his tax money.

It's like "We've spent more money on the NHS than ever before" - yes because year on year costs of goods and services to the NHS go up, even if it's 0.001% and so they give the NHS a 0.000001% rise to cover it, nowhere near enough to cover the cost. But it's not a lie, more has been spent on the NHS.
