The monochrome set: More than 13,000 Britons still using black and white TVs

London has the most licences with 2,715, followed by Birmingham and Manchester

More than 13,000 families are still watching black and white telly, despite last year?s digital switchover and the arrival of high-definition and 3D TV.

Figures from the TV Licensing Authority show thousands of households are shunning pin-sharp imagery on flat screens to watch far more cheaply in monochrome.

Experts say the credit crunch is forcing many to stick with black and white as the licence fee remains frozen at just ?49 a year compared with ?145.50 for a colour set.

Even adding the ?30 cost of a digibox to convert old-fashioned tellies to receive digital images the retro models are still a bargain home entertainment item ? unless you fancy watching the snooker, of course. In the 80s commentator Ted Lowe whispered one of TV?s most quoted phrases: ?For those of you watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green.?

The number of black and white TVs has fallen dramatically from 93,000 13 years ago to 13,202 today.

But a TV Licensing spokesman was surprised so many remain with sales of flat screen TVs, tablets, laptops and smartphones on the increase.

He said: ?It is remarkable that with the digital switchover complete, 41% of UK households owning HDTVs and the country leading the world in accessing TV content over the internet more than 13,000 households still choose to watch their favourite shows on a black and white telly.?

You might just find these people do actually have black and white TV or some might be using the oldest trick in the book to save ?????? and not get caught without a licence!!!

JUST A COTTON picking cheese grating minete

As the entire of Ingland is now digital, that means no b/w tv will be able to receive a tv picture

to get a picture you need a dodgybox or sly box/ verin etc etc.

these ALL receive Color - so thefore you need a Color license.

so by rights they should be no longer b/w licencses

ok, might be some people for medical reasons/color blind 'need' it in black/white just turn the color down a bit

i view DK on the skin Christmas 2008 - anything else is WAY WAY to dark to view.

        Meat.

Ok you need ?250 for over 16oocc car road tax, how are they going to find out if you put a 6 cylinder 3.500cc engine in a 1200cc punto and get the tax for half of that amount and run around!!!!!!! Once recorded in the devil database the robot stops reminders?

To use a modern freeview box on a black and white telly you would need to convert the scart output signal from the freeview into an rf signal which could be watched on the black and white telly. It can be done but I'm more inclined to agree that it's lies to get the cheaper license.

Ha, many years ago.. probably 2003, i fitted Sky Digital on a poor council house in oldham. They too had a black and white tv.

There was no dispute if they where lying or not as the had milk crates to sit on and that was it..

I felt sorry for the boy who had skipped school for 5 seconds and thought he will probably be robbing my van if Nickelodeon wasn't airing Keenan and Kel at the time..

It's about time that TV licensing was got rid of. It costs money to enforce, it costs money to print licenses, send the letters etc. May as well just admit that it's a tax, add it as a tax and top slice it from HMRC. That way they don't make criminals of people who genuinely can't afford one, the whole process costs less because they don't need the pen pushers, enforcers, offices to house them in etc and courts. Why make people criminals for the sake of it?

Bloody stupid idea when they know almost everyone has a TV or the means to watch it anyway.
My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.
