Vegetarians 'cut heart risk by 32%'

Ditching meat and fish in favour of a vegetarian diet can have a dramatic effect on the health of your heart, research suggests.

A study of 44,500 people in England and Scotland showed vegetarians were 32% less likely to die or need hospital treatment as a result of heart disease.

Differences in cholesterol levels, blood pressure and body weight are thought to be behind the health boost.

The findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Heart disease is a major blight in Western countries. It kills 94,000 people in the UK each year - more than any other disease, and 2.6 million people live with the condition.

The heart's own blood supply becomes blocked up by fatty deposits in the arteries that nourish the heart muscle. It can cause angina or even lead to a heart attack if the blood vessels become completely blocked.

Scientists at the University of Oxford analysed data from 15,100 vegetarians and 29,400 people who ate meat and fish.

Over the course of 11 years, 169 people in the study died from heart disease and 1,066 needed hospital treatment - and they were more likely to have been meat and fish eaters than vegetarians.

Fascinating stuff, although there's nothing really new there. One thing has always puzzled me though.

Just wtf is the point of living longer if you can't enjoy a good fry-up?
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

Vegetarians...... Have you ever seen a healthy looking one?

Here's part of a very one sided view of vegetarianism...

What are the health benefits of a vegetarian diet?

According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing:
        • Heart disease
        • Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers
        • Diabetes
        • Obesity
        • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

This is because a healthy vegetarian diet is typically low in fat and high in fiber. However, even a vegetarian diet can be high in fat if it includes excessive amounts of fatty snack foods, fried foods, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Therefore, a vegetarian diet, like any healthy diet, must be well planned in order to help prevent and treat certain diseases.
Are there any health risks in becoming a vegetarian?

Some vegans may have intakes for vitamin B-12, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and occasionally riboflavin that are lower than recommended.
Please note the lack of details surrounding the lower intake of vitamins & calcium.
The first thing that comes to my mind is rickets. Although mainly a childhood condition, it can effect adults.

Give me meat & a balanced diet any day of the week over this..

Signs and symptoms of rickets include:
        • Bone pain or tenderness[5]
        • dental problems[5]
        • muscle weakness (rickety myopathy or "floppy baby syndrome" or "slinky baby" (such that the baby is floppy or slinky-like)[6]
        • increased tendency for fractures (easily broken bones), especially greenstick fractures
        • Skeletal deformity[5]
          • Toddlers: Bowed legs (genu varum)[6]
          • Older children: Knock-knees (genu valgum) or "windswept knees"
          • Cranial, pelvic, and spinal deformities (such as lumbar lordosis)

        • Growth disturbance

Wrist X ray showing changes in rickets, mainly cupping is seen here.

Chest X ray showing changes consistent with rickets, this changed is usually referred to as Rosary beads of rickets

        • Hypocalcemia (low level of calcium in the blood)
        • Tetany (uncontrolled muscle spasms all over the body)
        • Craniotabes (soft skull)
        • Costochondral swelling (aka "rickety rosary" or "rachitic rosary")
        • Harrison's groove[5]
        • Double malleoli sign due to metaphyseal hyperplasia
        • Widening of wrist[6] raises early suspicion, it is due to metaphysial cartilage hyperplasia.
          Widening of wrist

An X-ray or radiograph of an advanced sufferer from rickets tends to present in a classic way: bow legs (outward curve of long bone of the legs) and a deformed chest. Changes in the skull also occur causing a distinctive "square headed" appearance (Caput Quadratum). These deformities persist into adult life if not treated. Long-term consequences include permanent bends or disfiguration of the long bones, and a curved back.[7]

        One sided view

World's oldest father has second child at 96

Ramajit Raghav is the world's oldest dad for the second time.
The world's oldest dad has proved his record-breaking virility by fathering another child at 96.

He attributed his virility to a healthy lifestyle, eating lots of fruit and dairy products and having sex three or four times a night.

The strict vegetarian and former wrestler said his daily diet included two litres of milk, fresh vegetables and chapattis (Indian flat bread).
