Argentina: Falklands 'Ours In 20 Years'

Argentina will control the Falkland Islands within 20 years, the country's foreign minister has declared as he visits Britain.

Hector Timerman, in London for the first time, called the British "fanatics" as he claimed the UK was only interested in the islands because of their oil reserves.

He ruled out launching military action to end the long-standing dispute over their sovereignty but claimed Britain was internationally isolated in its claim.

His comments are the latest salvo in a 130-year-old dispute over the islands, which Argentina insists on calling the Malvinas.

      How can it be ours???

I could remember in 1960 East Africa was colonist by UK govt and Tanzania had independent in 60s there was an Island called Zanzibar were Arabs were ruling for years but at the end they had to give it up to the Tanzanian govt.

Falkland Islanders are govern as colonists and in my opinion we should give that Island back to Argentina because this Island is not like Australia, New Zealand, etc!!!

it had no native inhabitants, so you are correct that its not like australia.. we and the french were first on them.. the french gave up any right to them.. and we claimed them as our own. we settled them, and the people on them want to remain british citizens. argentina has no claim to them whatsoever. but let them try.. been a long time since weve had a just cause to fight for

If you go back into the history of the Falklands Islands they were discovered by the Portugese before Argentina actually existed. Even Argentina itself was formed by colonisation by the Spanish etc. Maybe its about time the original inhabitants of Argentina request their land back. Just being pedantic as if you back back long enough in time very few countries were inhabited by the nations that live their now.

The Falkland Islands belong to the Falklanders. The Falklanders have an arrangement with Britain in that they allow Britain to take care of foreign policy and as such hold sovereignty as a kind of save keeping.

The oil reserves and the fishing stocks ... belong to the Falklanders

The Falklanders are self governing... not run by the UK

A Falklander has the right to live in the UK, but I don't think it works the other way round.

I think the Falkland peoples have a great deal because we the UK take care of their defence... I just wish Scotland wouldn't seek independence and instead look to have a deal exactly like the Falklanders...

The main point here... the UK does not own the Falklands inhabited by very wealthy people..

I hope I've got all those statements right now because last year I was talking a load o' crap on this very subject but was put right by speaking to some Falklanders and interested parties directly.

Can't remember now how much the UK spends on defending Falklands .. like new miltary airport etc but it is big bucks! .. It's amazing as far as FI is concerned how much we're treated like mushrooms here in UK

Look there is no such thing as Falkland islanders most have ether British passport or Argentina passport.

More like same issue with China and Japan they are on the same subject, the Japanese allegation is entirely a self-directed, the bottom line is which ever country is bordering the Islands should belong to them no question asked, suppose our adjoining Hebrides Island were rule by some one else this will not be acceptable.

The United Nations does not recognise a third party in the conflict. It says there are just two parts - the UK and Argentina.

Sure, Falkland Islanders do have a British passport but they do exist. I mean, I wouldn't visit a pub in Port Stanley and shout out "Falkland Islanders don't exist" just as much I wouldn't say there's nae Scots, English, Northern Irish or Welsh.

Falkland Islanders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Falkland Islanders, people living there for over a hundred years have a right to self determination and the United Nations is duty bound to recognise this. This is why they're having a referendum and that will further prove Britain is not a colonel power.
