Volkswagen to produce the world's most fuel efficient car with a record-breaking 313m

The VW XL1 will be powered by a tiny 800cc diesel engine and a separate electric motor (SWNS)

Driving this environmentally friendly car means the lightweight vehicle would cost only around ?1.40 to travel 62 miles

Volkswagen have announced the production of the world's most fuel efficient car - designed like a futuristic motor and capable of an incredible 313MPG.

The Volkswagen XL1 with its super sleek design is powered by a miniscule 800cc diesel engine and a separate electric motor and battery pack.

This will give the plug-in hybrid a 0-62mph time of 12.2 seconds and a top speed limited to a modest 99mph.

ut the XL1 is not about sporty performance but environmentally-friendly driving - with Volkswagen claiming it will be capable of a record breaking 313miles per gallon.

Not but it will be held out as hope that people get further on their gallon, 6 times as much as the average car, so that will give governments and oil companies the hope scope to raise the price to ?36 a gallon in the future and people will still buy it for their VW cars.

Looks like a tank to me, will they be selling them to Poland first? Wheels are ugly, no taste at all.

VW are always riding somebodys shirt tails. Wow, they can get a hybrid to do 313MPG.

Have you seen what Mercedes have done?.... An all electric car with 740HP, 737 lb-ft of torque and 155 miles on a full charge.

Mercedes-Benz 2014 SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive - The 6.2-liter V-8 engine has been removed and in its place is a quartet of electric motors that route power through an axially-arranged transmission and draw on a high-voltage lithium-ion, 60-kWh battery pack. Thanks to the transmission setup, the SLS ED is equipped with 15.8-inch front and 14.2-inch rear ceramic composite disc brakes. In case you were worried about the added weight from the electric components, worry not -- the electric motors weigh just 99 lbs, the monocoque is crafted from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, and the body is made of aluminum. Total output stands at 740 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, meaning that 0-62 mph is accomplished in a scant 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph; driving range is estimated to come in at around 155 miles on a full charge ........

Lets see the Nissan Leaf match that.
