    Potholes: 'Crumbling Road Crisis' Warning

England and Wales are facing a "crumbling road crisis" according to a report that says the cost of repairing all the countries' potholes would be ?10.5bn.

The road survey carried out by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) has found one in five local roads is in "poor condition", which is defined as having five years or less life remaining.

Lack of funding for road repair work is blamed by the group, with local authorities in England reporting a shortfall in their annual budgets of ?829m.

You know the ultimate answer to this don't you? Put petrol up to ?10 a gallon and road tax up to ?1000 a year.

Around 50% of motorsists will take to cycling or public transport.
Less cars on the road means less roads and repairs needed
Government and oil companies still make the same money, if not more, for having half the number of drivers on the road

We're all in it together, we pay, they don't. Simple.

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

surely public transport costs would then go through the roof too?

Not everyone can use bikes or public transport they simply work too far away to bike or buses dont run when they need them, so they possibly leave work as its too expensive to go

Everything would be much more expensive to buy too, you get less vat as people spend less and companies lay off, people down south would go abroad for fuel and many may emigrate

Uk car market would crumble new and second hand

                      Is it worth it?

Subsidise public transport so that it drives people onto buses and trains. People need to eat, so they'd pay anyway, or starve.

                        What UK car market?

The government, and companies tbh, are always trying to balance the cost. If the government could drive 50% of cars off teh road, while still raising teh same revenue then why not? Would save building more roads, car parks and on maintenance, while keeping the same revenue would it not?

                          I cant see it

Most car parks pay dont they, they wont half empty. Then fuel costs would make everything dearer so they cut spending massively. Firms would close or lay off

People would stop going to work especially if the bus didnt stop close or run when their 2 till 10 shift finished or 10 till 6

You would have much more people on the dole so that would go up

And if the UK car market is so crap it will be twice as crap with this move, and as for second hand car sales pretty wouldnt they plummet too, isnt there about 14 million cars on road a good majority second hand

then you have mot stations, part places and garages all going bust more people on the dole

then you want to put the money gained on tax to the already subsidised public transport

                          No logic to me

If that's true why do the government always put the price of fuel up? I suspect it's to control the amount of money people have in their pocket without it being counted in any inflation calculations.

However I'm sure if they could get away with it they would - after all they can keep the same revenue and spend less.
