    Not for turning...

    Except when it suits him.

David Cameron halts press regulation talks

Prime Minister David Cameron has called a halt to cross-party talks on press regulation, sparking anger from party leaders and victims of media intrusion.

Mr Cameron will instead publish plans for a royal charter to establish a tougher press regulator, which Parliament will vote for on Monday.

Both Labour and the Lib Dems said they were disappointed and surprised.

The two parties had backed statutory underpinning as recommended by the Leveson inquiry into the press.

The inquiry was set up by Mr Cameron to examine the culture, practice and ethics of the press in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal at the now-defunct News of the World tabloid.

BBC News - David Cameron halts press regulation talks

He set it up, said he'd get it dealt with and then backs down just when things are moving forward. Wonder which of his m8's he took notice of.....

If it goes Labours way it will mean the press will have to clear it with Government before publishing the likes of politicians shagging around, taking backhanders etc.

The conservatives plans included unlimited fines against the papers if they stepped out of line. I wonder what one would serve the public better.

Also what kind of party would use blackmail like threatening to vote against cuts in red tape for businesses if they never got their way. Lets just shaft the people so we can cover our backsides if we screw up by banning the press from reporting it. Nice party there. Not.

Don't get me wrong they're all slime bags but I'd rather have a party that wasn't frightened of what the press could report. Pretty much sums it up when Labour would side with the Lib Dems.

Labour have already said they want the Leveson inquiry enshrined in law. It's been on the news, stated by Labour MPs on current affairs program's and also in the New Statesman which happens to be a Labour magazine.

I think the Conservatives are as bad as Labour but why give a Government the power to stop the press from reporting on Government issues.

Give me an SNP, UKIP coalition any day.

Labour & Lib-Dems are promoting an "independent" body to regulate the press, enshrined in law, as Leveson suggested

that is slightly different than parliament regulating the press.

And if you want to point the finger at anyone, try Nick Clegg, he's the one with a veto.

It was Dodgy Dave who said he would implement Leveson's recommendations fully and now he's running from it and not carrying out what he said he'd do. Still what did we expect from someone who was a fag at Eton, bend over and let his press buddies tell him how it is.

Oh and thanks for moving the thread to the right place meant to mention it, but forgot

the problem there is could ukip actually form a govt even with a larger parties guidance. looking at some of their policies (health and the nhs for instance) I feel even sun readers would swerve this vote when it came to a general election. they are no more than a protest voters choice when the monster raving loonies field no candidates

A Marx Brothers/Three Stooges coalition would be preferable to that combination of crooks, chancers and incompetents.
