Nuisance Phone Calls: Which? Demands Action

Campaigners have demanded tougher regulation to clamp down on companies who plague people with unwanted phone calls and nuisance text messages.

Consumer group Which? found seven out of 10 consumers had been cold-called in the last three months, while two-fifths had received unsolicited texts.

The majority of calls and messages came from claims management companies (CMCs) offering to take up payment protection insurance (PPI) and personal injury cases.

Which? urged regulators including Ofcom and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to set up a joint taskforce to pull the plug on "intrusive and distressing" calls and texts.

It said offenders should receive fines and be put out of business.

"Unwanted calls or texts are not just a nuisance, they can be intrusive and distressing," executive director Richard Lloyd said.

"Many of us have been bombarded with spurious claims of PPI or injury compensation. People are telling us they are totally fed up with this nuisance and want to see action.

"Our research once again shows the behaviour of unscrupulous claims management companies must be tackled to stop them exploiting consumers who could claim compensation for free themselves.

"We want to see tougher regulation from the Government to clean up the CMC industry."

Which? said that a quarter of its members who made a claim on their car insurance were contacted by a CMC within three months.

Many of them were then bombarded by repeated messages. More than a fifth said they were sent at least 10 texts and one in eight received 10 or more phone calls.

Can not see why those in regulators like Office of Fair Trading including Ofcom and we got the Privacy Laws only hear for making money and they just waist of time another way of saying they not fit for purpose, we want a quake reaction force to put this irresponsible companies out of business.

Not any more it doesn't !

Most of the 'junk' calls now originate from VOIP systems where the numbers can change every minute. Some companies even buy large blocks of numbers from every uk exchange area - meaning they can appear local to the number they are dialling even though they may actually originate in India or China.

The TPS simply hasn't kept up with the available technology.

Cold-calling firm fined ?90,000 in first penalty of its kind

                  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9941041/Cold-calling-firm-fined-90000-in-first-penalty-of-its-kind.html

A marketing firm has become the first to be fined ?90,000 after plaguing members of the public with thousands of unwanted calls.

Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner, said a further 12 companies were being investigated as he declared the menace of cold-calling would not be tolerated.

More than 2,000 complaints were made over the actions of DM Design, with one victim who wanted to be removed from the firm?s system faced with the threat that staff would ?continue to call at more inconvenient times like Sunday lunchtime?.

He also pledged that it would not be an ?isolated penalty?, saying: ?We know other companies are showing a similar disregard for the law and we?ve every intention of

taking further enforcement action against companies that continue to bombard people with unlawful marketing texts and calls?.

this is why when anyone phones up and ask's I always say 'This number does not confirm or deny it's identity if you wish to contact the user please send a letter'

You never know who is on the other end and they can not prove who they are
