Yes, Your New Car Has A 'Black Box.' Where's The Off Switch?

Detective Dave Wells plugs his laptop into a car's event data recorder. A large portion of new cars are equipped with the device, and the government is considering making them mandatory in all vehicles. But some say there should be an "off" option

If you're a vehicle owner and happen to have a car accident in the near future (we hope you don't), it's likely the crash details will be recorded. Automotive "black boxes" are now built into more than 90 percent of new cars, and the government is considering making them mandatory.

Dave Wells, a detective at the King County Sheriff's Office in Washington state, specializes in accident reconstruction.

That means he's often crouched under steering wheels, looking for the connector that mechanics use to get diagnostic codes. But Wells is using a different kind of tool, and it pulls out a very different kind of information.

Reading a sampling off his laptop, he says, "In the first 10 milliseconds they're up to a half-mile-per-hour acceleration."

This is crash data ? moment-by-moment statistics saved from the car's most recent collision. There's speed, acceleration, braking ? even information from inside the car.

"There are sensors under your seat," he explains. "So if someone tried to say there was another person in the car at a crash who had run away, this shows at the time of collision there was not."

Seems like a good idea, and why would you want to turn it off, unless you had something to hide.

Right typical emerican steroryping the germans

If you stuff your audi/vw you can send the airbagmodule to adolf jr in germany who can extract the data and ecplain what happened gor airbags yo deploy

      Resl life off line example;-

Cudtomer goes to audi moaning his airbag has gone off in a parkinglot

Desler refuses to do anything. Vostomer gets irrstate. So desler ships module to adolf jr in germany

Adolf jr says "5mph full lock right engine at 1100rpm right hand side impact"

One the costomer shown tnis ingo. He mentioned it might have been as he was doing a 3 point turn and jit the vurb

this country will be getting more and more like a police state, wouldnt suprise me if there isnt censors all over the place that these black boxes could pick up on recording when, where, what time you was in certain places, these would be a good idea if they reduced your vastly over inflated insurance premiums, which of that i doubt, hmmmmm bound to be a hack for it some where on dk

OK, if as a moderator, you could 'accidently' smash that strange green looking glass tube full of ink in the DK staff room - the one that prints the time and date of EVERY post - would you?

They considered making them compulsary on motorcycles a few years ago and gave up in the end, can't recall why, but most likely due to realisation that they wouldn't stay there very long. Anyway they abandoned the idea.

and it also fits in nicely with the goal of charging you per mile depending on which roads you use and when instead of road ta which I believe the government announced they were looking at last year...

They do exist, but won't help most safe drivers.

Black boxes can be installed that monitor your 'style of driving'. If they think your a safe driver then you might get slightly cheaper insurance.

The problem is, they'll be basing 'safe driving' in relation to acceleration, braking & G-forces on an average basis. Now I accelerate hard in a big powerful car & do brake hard at times, usually due to slow arse morons switching lanes without using their mirrors. I also corner fast.
I would be classed as high risk, or a bad driver, despite the fact that I'm an experienced driver & also very aware of what is going on around me.
The people who will be given lower insurance are those that never accelerate hard or go fast enough to even register a change in G-force. In short, those that join a motorway at 40mph and move straight to the middle lane without accelerating or using their mirrors. The same people who will do 40mph in a 60mph zone, then continue doing 40mph through a village that has a 30mph limit. It will be the people who infuriate every other driver enough that people will take greater risks just to get past them.

I class these people as 'bad drivers'.

On topic. The black box recorders for crash reconstruction are a good idea. But only if all vehicles involved have them installed. Otherwise it's just another one sided view.

Knowing this country, it would have to be added on as an extra.
