New migrants will not get free housing, warns David Cameron as Prime Minister stakes

David Cameron will signal his determination to make immigration a key election issue tomorrow, when he pledges to stop new migrants getting taxpayer-funded homes as soon as they arrive in the UK.

The Prime Minister will use a high-profile speech on immigration to announce plans that will force councils to bar migrants from social housing waiting lists until they have been in the country for up to five years.

The proposal will form part of a government-wide crackdown on new migrants' access to the benefits system and welfare services, including the National Health Service.

Mr Cameron's dramatic intervention, days after Nick Clegg said migrants from "high-risk" countries should only be allowed into the UK if they pay a deposit of at least ?1,000, reinforces the expectation that the main parties are preparing to trade blows over immigration in the run-up to the general election in 2015.

Labour has already admitted that it failed to heed voters' concerns over rising immigration when it was in office.

The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, yesterday told activists that the failing was one of several mistakes made by the Labour government which he had since tried to rethink.

I read this one instead BBC News - David Cameron 'to curb benefits for European migrants' which quoted him as saying
They will be kept off council house waiting lists in England for at least two years, under plans for councils to introduce a residency test.
but that doesn't mean to say they wont' make it onto the rest of the UK's lists. Of course it could also mean migrants form other parts of the UK who wanted housing in England as well. It's always in the detail with politicians when they make such statements...

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

All this crap about keeping them off of housing lists for 2 years, if they imposed the same rules about housing lists to these migrants as they do to the indigenous population they would not get on the list at all !!!
If you have made yourself purposely homeless (for us that can include losing your house because you cannot afford the mortgage) then you are not entitled to be on the housing list.
So unless any of these migrants did not have anywhere to live before moving here then they are not entitled to be on the housing list.
We have the means to do it but we need to enforce the rules on everyone including all these migrants !!!!

Right, if Cameron wants to keep the people happy and vote
For him he needs to hold an in/out referendum now!!

None of this "oh we won't be better off shit"

You're all working on the premise that we have some sort of say in all this... It's a bunch of millionaires that run the country as a business for the benefit of the rich, we are simply cattle to these people... Pay us your taxes then die before we need to keep or heal you...
The foreigners used to do just that, so the door was opened (or rather removed) until the crims caught on that life was free here... But now it's too late, they don't know who's who... Only that there's too many people living here all needing the nhs, and bins emptying.
The only folk they can milk are the honest Joe who on their radar.
They've ****ed us for a couple of years now it's time to think about sucking voters cocks again... And them that count will fall for it, there's only 2 parties in the race, and they are same apart from their tie colour.
For years both parties had categorically denied that immigrants got either housing or benefits... And anyone who pointed this out were simple labeled as bigots and racists. We'll have work houses and concentration camps if this lot get their way, they are already "cleansing" the cities of the poor and disabled.

No, his idea is to promise you a referendum if you vote him in at the next election obviously. It's called the carrot and stick method. First tell everyone half truths about immigrants and Europe and then, once the gullible have swallowed that, they'll vote for him again because they think he's going to give them a meaningful vote. I've seen nothing of great detail about what the referendum will be about. So in reality he could be promising a vote on whether we'll be in Europe or if we vote "No" have more taxation. The detail no doubt will be released after the lemmings have voted for him and his kind.

Anyone that believes we will get a vote in a referendum are living in a bubble. They are as bad as Labour. Tell us we will get a vote then backtrack if they get in power.

There will be no referendum. America want's the UK to be part of the EU as a big player on their side. With the far east becoming more powerful economically, the Americans know they need to trade more with the EU. As long as the US needs to use us, we won't get a choice in leaving the EU.

All politicians count on the poor memory of the common public. They think that as long as they're up there filling everyone with BS, we'll forget the truth & vote them back in. Look at Peter Mandleson, his whole political career is littered with fraud, bribes, expenses scandles & dodgy backhander deals. Yet he keeps coming back, currently with a life peerage in the house of lords.

Making fun of Brown he said: "I cant quite remember which member of the government it was who claimed to have abolished boom and bust. Well, we abolished boom!"
