Homeowner draws the line on problem parkers by daubing double yellows on his cottage

Homeowner John Anderson is so angry at drivers parking outside home in Butchers Lane, Coventry

A fed-up homeowner has taken drastic steps to stop cars parking outside his front door - by painting double yellow lines on his cottage.

John Anderson, 48, became enraged by motorists dumping their car outside when council workers painted yellow lines on the road - but not outside his property.

Robotics services engineer John took matters into his own hands and painted the lines across the front of his ?165,000 two-bedroom home last week.

They stretch all the way above John's front door of his white-washed home in Butchers Lane, Coundon, Coventry, beside a large exclamation mark warning drivers to steer clear.
The double yellow lines currently end just next to his home - making it legal for drivers to park outside his front door.

John, who has lived in his home for 25 years, is now demanding a residents' permit scheme to stop drivers using the space as a free parking bay.

Drivers started using the lane to park their cars in 2011 when the council narrowed one end of the street which made it impossible to park on both side.

He said: "I'm at work all day and then turn up at midnight and I'm having to drive half way round the village to find somewhere to park.

"It's a hassle and time consuming and not ideal when it's dark. We deserve our own place to park.

"I had to park a quarter of a mile away from my house the other day. "
"We don't just need parking restrictions, we need residents' parking permits.

"The lines will stay put until we can hold talks with the council about having these permits and maybe we can get it resolved.

"The lines will stay put until we can get results. Then I can have my nice white cottage back again."

"Then I can have my nice white cottage back again."

Paint a line around your head and it'll stop them parking on that as well, except the BBC who ignore yellow lines and park anyway so they can take photos

Are we sure that's a cottage & not a mid terrace house?

Why doesn't he just get hold of some 'Gas Works' barriers & set them up outside his house, just big enough for him to park his car in.

It's a pain in the arse but he bought the house and not the road outside it. If someone pays road tax they can park where they want as long as it's legally parked. The walk will do him good.

Look at that lane its narrow enough for council to make it a one way lane and problem solve, its no good telling the law abiding community we will draw yellow line and look some were else to park your car when there is no parking left?..

I'm surprised the council bothered with the yellow lines. We have a number of narrow very busy roads in my city and the council refuses to yellow line even one side of them. The only reason I can figure out is that it's cheap traffic calming for the council without having to pay. They let cars park on both sides of the road, if one car hits another tough it's not the councils problem, but it does make people think twice about speeding down such roads.

if both cars are legally parked who knows, but if one is ILLegally parked and fireman sam comes down, or even thomas the tank engine and takes a chunk off it - tough.

Had a thick lorry driver in once, he parked in a factory came out 2am car parked on doubble yellows - he at 2am had no choice but to call the fuzz - they banged on every door within a 10 mile radius - nothing to the fuzz said what Abba would do "Take a chance on me" but try to do little damages as possbale

He never got an infraction or bad rep points for it.

Have to make sure it was alarmed though, I have seen car drivers try and move motorbikes before so they can park....
